Hi Mick, How did a Portland Oregon guy become a Newcastle United fan? They will be playing Premier League again next season, let's wait and see how they fare. Siem de Jong played for PSV Eindhoven last year, just as his brother Luuk. I believe he still has a contract with Newcastle, so perhaps he'll return to Newcastle in the Premier League. Oh, it is a long family tradition. My mother and father both come from the Newcastle area, and were both ardent supporters. The rest of the family continued the tradition, even when they moved to South Africa. For me, even though Portland has a fine team, it would feel like treason to support anyone other than Newcastle United. Howay the lads!

Hi Katrina, and a belated welcome to the forum. I see that you are already getting some excellent advice. :-) I'm just south of you, in Portland. Nice to see so much Pacific Northwest representation on the forum.

Hi Siem. Welcome to the forum. You share a name with one of my favorite soccer players - Siem De Jong of Newcastle United. But I imagine that this is a relatively common Dutch name. Oh, and I think that there are a few other rock aficionados on this forum, so you won't be alone. Groete van Portland af! (Ek kan nie Niederlands praat nie, maar miskien is my Afrikaans verstaanbaar.)

Hi Billy, and a belated welcome to the forum. It looks like we have a lot of interests in common (ancient history, comics, collecting lots of different stuff, sports - though in my case it's soccer), so I will definitely be checking out your blogs. Feel free to shoot me links. Sorry to hear about your health issues. I hope that your hobbies lighten your heart a little. All the best. Mick

This one was postmarked in Paris on 12 July 1978. Stamp is Scott 1601, showing Our Lady of Bec-Hellouin Abbey.

It's called: The Secret Varieties of the 10c Consort. jimjung, if Steve can't use it for the newsletter, please consider reworking this into a romance novel. Title is perfect.

Alan has been very prolific with Zwolle cancels in this thread, but why should he have all the fun? I offer my own Zwolle for 21 June (2016).
And here is my fun Zwolle fact, from Wikipedia: "In World War II, Zwolle was single-handedly liberated from the Germans by Canadian soldier Léo Major. He was made an honorary citizen of Zwolle in 2005 and a street is named for him." So here's to you, Canadians of TSF. You are evidently a tough bunch.

June the 14th 1979 in Maine-et-Loire, in west central France. Nearby Angers Castle has the largest tapestry in the world. The stamp is Scott 1641 and depicts the Steenvorde Windmill. And here is the great big tapestry (from the French wikipedia): I've just finished going through a lot of French stamps, mainly from the 70s, that were part of my large recent Londonbus1 auction win. A number of them have lovely clear cancels, and will hopefully grace this thread in the weeks to come.

Go to your profile settings as if you were e.g. going to change your profile icon. Go to the Settings tab. There is a Profile Theme drop down menu there, and you can change it to one of six themes. Changing the theme gives you a different color scheme, among other things.

Oho. I had to change my theme to make this happen. I was using RedAbyss as my forum theme, and clicking on that drop down link just produced a blank window. So I changed to TheStampForum 2.0 link, and now the options are visible. Interesting.
Darn. I liked RedAbyss.

Do individual posts have permalinks? I wanted to link to a specific post recently, but could not see how to do it.

Just a brief note to report that I was able to attend PIPEX for a couple of hours yesterday. I wish that I had been able to spend longer, but a couple of hours is better than nothing.
Most of that was spend slowly making my way through the exhibitions. There was so much good stuff there, but in particular "Boer POW Camps in Ceylon 1900 - 1902" by Michael Dixon was pure class. A cursory search confirms that he has done other similar exhibitions, and I hope that some of his work is online.

Kind of a repost from the Sports and Olympics thread, but in that post I did not include the cancel. May the 9th 1981 in lovely Malaga. From a tourist postcard.

Japan 2008 150th Anniversary of the Iron and Steel Industry
Not much to say about this set, except that I think they are the very first stamps that I bought as a set when I decided to start collecting.

Thanks, Ryan, both for the answer to my question and the reminder about our journal access. "Private Auxiliary Marking" does seem to fit the bill, based on the first Youngblood article that you mentioned (November 2016). Those three articles show some fascinating examples of these, and I think that I now have another collecting interest!

There is already a fine thread explaining various stamp collecting terms here. However, if you still have a "what do you call it when..." type question after reading that excellent thread, it can be posted here. (Admin, if this type of thread already exists and I just missed it, please feel free to move this post.) I'll start - is there a specific term for those instructions and\or description of contents of an envelope or package that are written or stamped by the sender? I am thinking, for instance, of "Photos enclosed, please do not bend", "Live bees, handle with care" and the like.
