I use an emptied out tissue box with the opening widened. Works pretty well.

If you can tell, my mounted collection of QV Jubilees has been a hotbed of postmark fun. Not sure why the lone mint one is the 4.5d. Except that I love the colors/design.

Hi smauggie It is an interesting country (and a beautiful country). I have been to Colombia twice. Once to Bogota via Medellin and once to Cartagena via Barranquilla. The countryside of Medellin is so beautiful and idyllic. It is so sad that the country is at war. In Bogota there were soldiers with guns everywhere, but they seemed to keep the peace.
I might be able to devote some time to translations after the first weekend in March.

Allan said to check out the cheap stamps for pmks. Also bought 100 1p lilacs even though I don't like them. I much prefer the green/orange halfpenny stamps myself.

I have been following this thread with some interest. I have been considering collecting Colombia off an on for years.
As to "habilitado" the base world is "habilitar" which means to enable. Postage and revenue stamps of Latin America were set to be used for a specific time period, after which the stamp could no longer be used by the public. In some cases, when stamps of a particular denomination were not available, old stamps which were left over were re-enabled, or habilitado for use again, usually (but not always) with a value change. To signify that these stamps were now legal again to be used for postage, the overprint of "habilitado" was placed on the stamps along with any possible rate changes.
Hope that helps.

James, I cannot say for sure, but after about the 1940's, Universal Cancelling Machine (Pitney Bowes) dominated the market with few exceptions.

I have the entire cover, Bobby. In fact the envelope itself is from New Zealand featuring a picture of Lake Wakatipu in crude typographical fashion.

I wondered if there shouldn't be a thread for Australian Postmarks. My collection of Australian postal history is limited, but I am happy to share what I have. For starters here is a Feb 24 1956 Sydney slogan cancel announcing the Melbourne Olympic Games. With US machine cancels with which I am more familiar, we refer to the number 9 as a "service mark". Is there a local term for these numerations of machine cancels? Cheers.

A couple more. Gerrard . S . Cross? I can't quite figure it out. Perhaps someone better with British cancels will know. Cheers. Smashing postmark, not sighted that one prior. Gerrards Cross. Bucks. (Buckinghamshire) wiki The town name is new compared with the great bulk of English towns. Gerrards Cross did not exist in any formal sense until 1859 when it was formed by taking pieces out of the five parishes of Chalfont St Peter, Fulmer, Iver, Langley Marish and Upton to form a new ecclesiastical parish. It is named after the Gerrard family who in the early 17th century owned a manor here. Thank you Rod. A pleasure as always.

Western Airlines (Airletter) 1982-1984 16 different stamps were issued. Here is one of the earlier examples. I am not sure if this is a booklet pane of 3 or just a block of 3.
