WWII Patriotic Postal Card - With "Buy War Bonds" slogan meter. Reverse is advertisement for stamp dealer Frederick Dietz. Note "P" and "O" on sides of town mark indicating an impression made with a meter machine owned by a post office. Excellent smauggie. If its not too much of a pain the next time you have your scanner going, could you post a scan the same size of the other side of the card please. Rick

I also picked up this cover dated December 26, 1913, local rate in La Cananea (A small mining town at the headwaters of the Sonora River). The addressee, James Cohn was a mining reporter for the Bisbee Daily Review (accross the border in Bisbee, AZ).

Been wanting one of these Australia Map meters for some time now. Apparently you can surf on land through NSW.

Apparently there are several instances of this postal marking. I think while it didn't happen often, it did happen regularly.

Here is a fun cover to share. The mail bag wasn't completely emptied it seems, and the bank statement lay dormant for a bit. Here is the received cancel on the back.

They won't ever stop changing Andy. Hopefully Ukraine can repulse its attackers and eventually reclaim Crimea. Russia's "I am screwing with you because I can" mentality won't last forever.

In the US they are more popularly referred to as manatees, though dugong (dewgong) is a more ancient name for them.

Cairo, IL sits at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. My guess was a mail boat transit marking, though some definitive reference would be helpful.
You beat me to the punch Rod.

Some additional info about the cover, Rod. I believe the addressee was an officer of the 4th Iowa Volunteers (Infantry Regiment) while they were stationed in Corinth to protect the supply lines of the Union's western front.

This would most likely be from Melbourne then (given it is from the state of Victoria).

It`s April 12th in Sortland, Norway and Southend-On-Sea, England. I just had to consult the Scott Catalogue didn't I A paper clip on a stamp ? A Norwegian Invention by Johan Vaaler (Sc1214) Guaranteed to leave no rust stains.

Hello Antonio,
I like that postage due card you posted above...... someone must have mailed a brick to the electric co. Hi Smauggie, welcome to the forum. rogo I think it was common practice for those companies that received large quantities of business reply mail where they paid the postage costs for the postie to just make bundles of the incoming mail with a running total of the postage due and then slap on whatever was the relevant amount on the top envelope/card. I've got some similar type envelopes that have large numbers of postage due stamps applied, way more than any single envelope would ever cost. Just a thought, Rick Quite right. The postcard rate was 7 cents at the time I think. So the two postage due meters paid for the business reply mail for 200 postcards. The postcards were sent to customers asking them if they would like to receive a book about how to save electricity.

I saw another post asking about a month in a cancellation in Spanish and I thought I would add a few lists of months as they are in Spanish as a general reference. Of course many of them are almost identical to English.
Month - Spanish - Abbreviated January - Enero - Ene February - Febrero - Feb March - Marzo - Mar April - Abril - Abr May - Mayo - May June - Junio - Jun July - Julio - Jul August - Agosto - Ago September - Septiembre - Sep October - Octubre - Oct November - Noviembre - Nov December - Diciembre - Dic
Some other postal terms:
Mail - Correo Air - Aereo Airmail - Correo Aereo Late - Retardo Overprinted with new rate - Habilitado stamp, seal - sello cover/envelope - cubierta registered - registrado, certificado tax - impuesto insurance - seguro
I can add more as I recall or as people may ask.

I hadn't realized this was here, and chanced upon in today and saw some old friends and thought I would stop in and say Hi. I specialize in Panama and Canal Zone Postal History, but dabble in a number of collecting areas.
