It is with great sadness that I must announce the passing of Jerry B at the age of 86 in Marietta, Georgia. Jerry was a long-time member of the Forum, having joined shortly after its inception in 2013. In addition to participation on the Forum, Jerry volunteered to assist in the preparation of the Newsletter and was always quick to remind that there was no "u" in "Colombia." Jerry will definitely be missed.

The February 6th issue of the APS Spotlight is available here. This issue touches home as our very own ronbreznay will be the featured speaker during the February 27th Stamp Chat. Rather than tell you his subject, I'll let the curious among you scroll through the issue to find it for yourself.

rod222 , If one can believe Wikipedia, you won't find the town on the map because Crimea wasn't a town. Melbourne's Kooyong Road post office was renamed Crimea in 1946. I haven't been able to pin down where the PO was located but I'm guessing somewhere near Crimea street.

... I still don't know why someone would add the "-BCM/FF7S" stamp on the back as it appears to have nothing at all to do with the cover. This clip found on page 332 of the December 11, 1926 issue of Stamp Collecting leads me to believe that the mark was associated with some sort of expertizing service.

... Now, the sender intended it to go by Air Mail via a method that I can't quite make out (help anyone?). But, apparently, it went via ship. ... Any clue on whether it even got close to a plane?
I believe there is a strong likelihood that the postmark date is May 20, 1929 and that the cover did travel by air "via Hay and Cootramundra." The first aerial mail service between Melbourne and Hay was inaugurated on July 21, 1925. At Hay, the letter would have connected to the Adelaide-Sydney service which called at Mildura, Hay, Narrandera and Cootamundra.

As I recently have done with APS Spotlight, the weekly Newsletter of APS, I'll also be doing here with news from the soon to be launched StampEd. This StampEd Newsletter was received today. As with the APS Spotlight, I don't know how long the link will remain active so I'd suggest you click on it at your earliest convenience.

Florida is a rather large State but we've got about two dozen Floridians who are considered "active" members so this might be of interest to some. This weekend, January 19-21, 2024 the Sarasota Philatelic Club is hosting the subject exhibition. It will be a World Series of Philately (WSP) show. Information about the exhibition may be found here.

I receive the Society's weekly newsletter by email and, rather extracting information from it to post, I thought I'd try a simpler approach and just post the link to the online version each week. I don't know how long these newsletters will remain accessible so consider this thread an experiment. Here is the link to the issue dated January 16, 2024.

TimG , That is a customs baggage stamp and it is not listed in Scott. See this thread. Here is an article from the American Revenuer that provides more information -- it is a .pdf download. That article also includes a catalog-type listing of all the various stamps.

Plan Your Visit: APS Stamp and Cover Shop
Did you know the APS gift shop in Bellefonte stocks not just philatelic gifts (like postcards and stylish stamp ties), but also countless stamps, covers, and stamp collecting supplies curated by Carter-award-winning couple Leonard and Darlene Bloom? All materials were kindly donated by APS members from around the world, and the proceeds of all purchases help fund the APS mission. Plan your visit today! APRL: November New ResourcesNovember brought a whopping 73 new resources to the APRL, from Post Office Plan of Edinburgh and Leith Constructed from Ordinance and Actual Surveys, 1925-1926 to Philatelic Maps: A Series of Maps Including Countries, Colonies and Localities That Have Issued Stamps. You can learn more about these resources and how to access them in librarian Scott Tiffney's monthly column, " APRL New Resources."

I finally got around to buying a piece of plexiglass for use in my self-adhesives removal undertaking and thought I'd give it a try this morning and was pleased with the purchase (previously I'd been using the glossy advertising cards included in my junk mail). The Priority Mail Express stamp shown in the Birds on Stamps thread was one of the test subjects, below are some others.

This $28.75 Priority Mail Express stamp (Scott 5752; Jan 22, 2023) depicts a red-tailed hawk flying over a scene near Newfound Gap in the Great Smokey Mountains.

The APS Reference CollectionThe Society maintains two reference collections of philatelic material — one for fakes and forgeries and one for genuine stamps and postal history. Many items that have been judged “not genuine” subsequently have been donated to the APS Reference Collection of Fakes and Forgeries. Established and managed by the late James Beal in the 1970s, APS continues to add material to this 38-volume display of spurious stamps and covers. The APS Collection of Genuine Stamps and Postal History was created in the early 1990s and is separated into two groups. The United States collection is housed in 42 albums. All other countries are arranged in alphabetical order in over 400 binders. All the contents come from generous contributions by thoughtful APS members. These collections provide a clearinghouse of resource material for philatelic researchers visiting the American Philatelic Center. APS had been posting portions of the collection monthly on their website; however, it seems that practice ended in August 2019. You may view and/or download those that have been posted here (some of the links may be broken). Here is an example of what you'll find there, a page that has been extracted from the .pdf on Japan.

On December 11th I noted that I had received 3 needed stamps for my U.S. collection. Today, I verified their identifications prior to mounting in my album. Sadly, one of the stamps will be heading back to iHobb as it was a Scott O121 (Wmk191) that had been misidentified as an O125 (Wmk190).

My process is rather simiple. I scan all of my stamps at 600dpi. Next, using the free IrfanView software, I straighten the image if needed, closely crop the image, resize it to 1080p width, and save it at a file size of 99kb. If scanning a block or page, I follow the same process but save at a file size of up to 1MB to avoid pixelation when the image is enlarged. Below is a single stamp processed as I described above.

December 13Postmarked on this date in 2017 by our friends at the American Philatelic Center's Contract Postal Unit in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. The two 10 cent stamps from the Mineral Heritage issue (Jun13, 1974) are Scott 1540 (Amethyst) and 1541 (Rhodochrosite). The 29 cent Kit Carson stamp is from the Legends of the West issue (Scott 2869n; Oct 18, 1994).

Yet another let down. I thought I had acquired a coil strip that I needed for my Test (dummy) stamp collection but, sadly, it was not to be.
Does anyone else get depressed when they discover that the stamp(s) that they thought they had purchased turn out to have been misidentified?
I just notified the seller of his/her error, including the criteria that differentiated the stamps, and advised that I wanted to return the lot.

Added 2 missing cachets to my 1935 China Clipper First Day Cover collection and 3 needed U.S. stamps from iHobb's RedBox offerings. Have far too much to do collection-wise yet far too little time in which to do it.
