Never trust an expertising mark on a stamp! Modern technology shows they can sometimes be quite wrong, As we see they can be faked. The fashion for these seems to by very largely European based, and German in particular. Confusing also when the h/s may simply be an owner’s mark rather than an indication of genuineness They are hardly ever found on British , Empire or Commonwealth stamps and I am not aware of their use in US generally . I seem to have read somewhere that there was a convention about the placement of the mark and a handstamp inverted or in an unusual position could indicate doubt or even mean the stamp was forged. I may be quite wrong of course , has anyone else knowledge of such a convention? A certificate + photo from a reputable expert is more to be trusted than old handstamps on the reverse which I consider deface the stamp . Ps can one “deface” on the reverse ..... Trusting an expertising mark is a chance at best. Unless, it comes with the photo certificate, which I own one of. The US doesn't use expertising marks at all on stamps, most here would consider this defacing it, as you say. I actually write on the back of most of my Ohio State Revenue stamps, just because I don't want to look them up constantly, to figure out which one they are. So it doesn't bother me to have writing on the back of a stamp.
Here is the placement of expertising marks from www.bpp.de, which is the group that does expertising. As you can see, inverted marks are used on the overprinted stamps only.
Hope this helps.
Have a great day.
Mike.

Thanks Chris. It's a good thing I didn't know they had marks on the back when I bought the album. I just bought them for the stamps in the album. Have a great day. Mike.

The cachet on the cover was designed by William E. Smith, Jr. of Minnesota. His cachet line is called William II and it is abbreviated as WII (info just learned on another forum). Wow. This is actually a very nice cover for a Marvel stamp. I have been looking for other cachet makers for these, and I have only found 3 different ones so far, and have never seen any marked WII. Thanks for the info Steve, as I can now look for these.
Have a great day. Mike.

Ok, I have looked through my album this morning, for about 3 hours. I didn't realize until today that some people actually have small letter stamps, to mark the back of their stamps with. I thought only the people who expertised stamps, used those little letter stamps. So, with that discovery, I now have figured out that the album has about 50% or a little more, of the stamps have actually been expertised. There are at least 7 different persons expertising stamps, that I have seen so far. The best thing about these stamps in this album being expertised, is that I didn't even know they were done, until I received the album. I paid a little over $200 for this album from a European stamp auction a few years back now. Whether they are expertised or not, doesn't really matter to me, but from the looks of it, they do have the correct colors. Unfortunately, my scanner doesn't scan in true color, so everything almost looks the same in my scanned pictures. I have tried to take some pictures with my phone, to try to show the real colors of the stamps. In person, you can see the differences in the colors of the stamps, but I can't see hardly any difference in the scans unfortunately. I have shown the original pages with a scan and a photo from my phone. I have also shown the stamps scanned out of the pages and the backs of the stamps that show the expertising marks. The album goes from Germany #1 - #104. So, here are some pictures: #88-#91
#94 - #97
#102 - #104
Here is a side view of the album, just to show how many pages there are, and a picture of my helper, lol:
Have a great day. Mike.

I do have one advantage for determining the color of all these. The album I bought at auction, that someone had gotten all the different colors on each page, almost every single stamp has been Expertised, and stamped on the back. I didn't know this when I bought the album. When I got the album and started looking at the stamps, I found the expertising marks on the back of them. I would be willing to bet that at least 90% of the entire album has been expertised and there are hundreds of stamps in the album. I couldn't even begin to imagine what that cost originally. I just got lucky one that one. Here are some examples. In these pictures the stamps all look the same colors almost, but the actual pages in your hands, you can see the color differences:
Have a great day. Mike.

I also thinking the two stamps are distinct color varieties of the 3 pf stamp, one being olive brown and the other sienna. Other members' opinions on this are welcome. Good luck with the colors. I have a few hundred of these, and they all look different colors to me. LOL. I still don't have a Germany color chart though, and I really should buy one. I have an entire album that I bought where the guy had put every color variation of all the stamps in an album, so I have a pretty good reference for a lot for these stamps, and I still can't tell the colors easily.
have a great day. Mike.

I have a question for the group regarding the expertizing marks on the band overprint issues. There is a tiny "Sb" at the lower right corner on most of these stamps. I was told long ago that if these stamps had "Sb" or just "b" stamped on the back then the overprint was definitely genuine. Can anyone confirm this? I would appreciate your replies and comments.
Good morning. If any of the stamps were found to be fake, they would be marked "falsch". The "Sb" is most likely the initials that a stamp dealer used to identify the stamps he sells. This way, if someone buys a genuine stamps from him, they can't return a fake one to get their money back. It is his way of guaranteeing his stamps are authentic, without paying for the expertising of them. Of course, his initials are only as good as his reputation with his customers. Have a great day. Mike.

www.germanstamps.net/Edit - I tried to add the link, but it kept bouncing me back here to the forum. Admin or mod - am I making an error somehow? Is it because I am on my iPad? I get the same thing when I click on the link on PostmasterGS signature. Thanks for your help. It loads for me in like 3 seconds; link is working good. And once again PostmasterGS, "What an amazing site"!

I really hate those issues. The identifiers for the two types aren't great, and the normal variations in printing make it really difficult to tell them apart. If I had to guess: MiNr. 207 — all P except W on Row 2, #3 I would agree with the PostmasterGS, but I think the MiNr. 207 on Row 2, #3 is actually a P. The stars are large, not small. Not wanting to argue, but when I blow them up, it is the same size as a P star.
I do have to agree with philatelia, your website is awesome. It goes beyond any others I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing all you knowledge with us. I am but a lowly new collector of Germany, and you make collecting Germany better for all of us with your website.
Have a great day.

If you are interested in DDR, I am going to sell all of my DDR collection, along with my Berlin collections, & BRD collections. I need to get rid of some stamps, and I really am not interested in these any more. I have least amount of DDR though, I don't even have a compete set of albums. In the Berlin stamps, I have an almost complete Hingeless album, I will be selling, and several others, not complete albums, all Hingeless albums though. IN BRD, I also have several sets of albums that are all hingeless, and have different amounts of stamps in them. Just let me know if anyone is interested, as I will let people on here have first choice before I sell them on EBAY.
Have a great day.
Mike.

Just recently started looking at state revenues. Purchased a couple recently was gifted a Colorado and Some Ohio's. I do find them interesting. Good Morning. Don't waste your money on the Ohio halves, only buy stamps with both parts. The halves are worthless unless rare. If you would like some Ohio Sales Tax Stamps, send me your address, and I will send you a packet of them for free. I have plenty, maybe 40-50,000 or so. LOL.
Have a great day.

I have always, and always will, prefer a used stamp over a Mint stamp. A used stamp has done it's job, where as, a mint stamp is like that lazy cousin we all have, that has never done a days work, he just lays around, and looks good. I understand that some mint stamps are harder to find, especially the classics. But, in some cases, the used stamps are even harder to find than mint ones, and are worth much more.
Everyone has their own idea of what a nice stamp is, whether it is a perfectly centered, mint, with full gum, US #1 stamp, or last years Forever Flag stamp, with a smeared, wavy line cancel. It doesn't really matter which stamps you collect, mint or used, just as long as you collect stamps. You have to collect what you like and can afford, not what anyone tells you that you should collect.
Everyone also has their own way or collecting, sorting, and displaying their own stamp collection. Some people have to have every stamp perfectly mounted, in store bought stamp album, trying to fill every space with a stamp, so the pages look complete. There are people who just keep all their stamps in stock books, so their collection can be fluid, and can be changed any time they get a new stamp. Personally, I have some books with stamps hinged to pages, I have some hingleless albums full of mint stamps, hingeless albums full of used stamps, and I have some albums that are just Vario pages, laid out to look good, the way I like them. But most of all I have envelopes, stock books, and boxes full of stamps. Some that I have to sort through, and some that are just extras, but they are all "MY" stamps.
Collecting stamps is not like collecting other things, it isn't always about how much something is worth, or how much you can sell it for. To a comic book collector, a perfect looking, unread comic, is always what they want, no matter who you are. But to a stamp collector, the old used stamp may be more desirable than the perfect mint stamp. To most stamp collectors it is about the chase, finding that elusive stamp, the one that no one else can find, but you are determined to find it, for as cheap as possible, but in as good of condition as possible. We all have that "Holy Grail" stamp, you all know what I am talking about. That one stamp you have always wanted to find. You know it is out there, it calls your name every time you start looking for stamps, but you just can't hear which direction it is calling to you from. You know that you just have to find it some day, and be able to afford it. LOL.
The camaraderie that comes with collecting stamps, and engaging with other stamp collectors, is what it is all about. This Forum is what has made collecting stamps fun for me again. I have no stamp shows to go to anywhere near me, I have no stamps shop anywhere near me, I don't even know one stamp collector that lives near me, so all I have is the internet. I can buy stamps anywhere online, but I can't find knowledgeable people, who are nice, and helpful just anywhere, but we have all found that here, in this forum.
So, whether you collect mint or used stamps doesn't really matter, just so long as you enjoy collecting stamps. Collect what you like, whether it be mint or used, but never let anyone else tell you what you should collect, because there is no "Should Collect", just "COLLECT".
I hope everyone has a great day today.
Mike.

My color checker is Michel and is written in German. Therefore you need to know the German color names, or as I have also have a Michel special in English (and German). Where did you get this? Thanks, Mike.

To insert vertical space, for example, between the text and a row of stamps, you can use the PAGE_VSPACE command. e.g PAGE_VSPACE(15.0) will insert 15mm of space. You can even use a negative value which will move the next item up. Now you tell me! LOL. I have been using an extra row of verbiage that is blank to do extra spacing.
Thanks for the tip.

Well, I have been using 4.2 for 2 days now and it seems to be working great.
Can you tell me the different fonts that are in it? Or tell me where to look for them.
Have a great day.
