British Empire Study Group Free Webinar
"De-Mystifying the Line-Engraved Cape Triangles"Just wanted to let everyone know that I have been invited by Rob ( REL1948 ) and the BESG program organizers to be the featured speaker on the above subject on the date shown. Further details on time and where to register will be supplied as the date draws closer. These programs typically start at 18:00 Eastern Time (6pm). Anyway, for those interested in Cape Triangles, I will be presenting material from the article I wrote for the Cape & Natal Philatelic Journal, as well as some other material. I haven't yet started working on the presentation file, but I need to do that soon. It will be an interesting experience for me, as I have given many such presentations in my professional capacity, but I have rarely done anything related to stamps. Anyone who would like a copy of the article, please PM me with your email address, and I will get it to you. It would make good background reading for whatever I will end up presenting, and perhaps provide some inspiration for questions. I am hoping for a good turnout from TSF members for this event. I am also persuadable in terms of what I present in this area, so if there is anything about Cape Triangles about which you would like to hear more, please post it here, and I will try to include it. Special thanks to Rob and the BESG organizers for considering me for their program. I will try to justify their confidence in me.

I will need to be there….I am still struggling with those 4d blues SG6 and 19 without confidence . In addition have just won a “ collection “ of 22 assorted triangles SG1 onwards, for a substantial £££+ figure . I await arrival impatiently.
just checked I have a clash of dates . It coincides with our stamp club night .

Please PM me your preferred email address, and I will send you an invitation using Outlook. It will just be a placeholder for the time being, but I will add the link once it is made available. Anyone else who would like to receive an electronic calendar invitation, please just send me a PM with your preferred email address, and I will send it to you, no problem. Alex, I have good news for you, too. Perhaps you are thinking that the timing is 18:00 GMT, but it is Eastern Time (US), which means it is 5 hours earlier than in the UK. So, the start time in the UK for the webinar should be 23:00 local time, which I am guessing will be after your stamp club meeting is over. Does that help? Your latest acquisition sounds really interesting. I hope you will share scans and give us all a chance to help you with identification. |

Actually, there is a listing of upcoming presentations at the bottom of the Invitation I send out each month. The list on the last invitation showed the first 3 presentations for 2023 which includes Chris (Beryllium Guy) on March 9, 2023. We are working on the remainder of the years presentation lineup and should have the completed list available by the end of January. Thank you so much for your interest.

Just giving this thread a bump to remind everyone that the next BESG program will be delivered by yours truly. I have just started working on the presentation file this week, and I am hoping to have it well along by the end of the weekend. I am, by the way, happy to receive suggestions as to what would be most interesting to talk about on the subject of the Line-Engraved Cape Triangles. I made that request in my original post in this thread, but the discussion devolved into posts about the lateness of the hour in the UK, and I didn't get any suggestions. Anyone?  The article I wrote was pretty technical, and I am thinking perhaps to make my presentation a bit more general rather than getting into all of the details about how to identify the 4-Pence De La Rue stamps versus the Perkins Bacon ones. I welcome any suggestions, as I am working on it now. |

For the enquiring minds who want to see something beyond just the title slide, here is the outline of my presentation. I would like to point out that although my main interest is the line-engraved Cape Triangles, there is more to this presentation than just that. I have incorporated material from my TSF Newsletter article about gaining philatelic knowledge online, so even if you are not specifically a Cape Triangle enthusiast, you may still find other info of interest.  |

I have registered but not sure if I’ll be there for the start as it is Stamp club night finishes around 10.30 UK time …..I then have to get home having dropped off two passengers on the way……may see you there, but best wishes meantime.

Greetings, everyone! Today's the day! We had our technical run-through yesterday, and I was able to join Zoom and share the presentation file, so everything checked out operationally. Just to be clear on the timing for the program start, it is as follows: 15:00 PST (3pm Pacific) 17:00 CST (5pm Central) 18:00 EST (6pm Eastern) 19:00 AST (7pm Atlantic) 23:00 GMT (11pm UK & Portugal) ------------------------------------------ 00:00 CET (Midnight European Time) 06:00 JST (6am Japan) 08:00 (8am Sydney, Australia) 10:00 (10am in New Zealand) When I was chatting with the organizers yesterday, they told me that about 170 people have signed up to attend so far, which is pretty good. During COVID lockdown times, the BESG programs used to draw about 300 participants, but post-pandemic, they are averaging around 100 per session. Anyway, I look forward to seeing some of you there! |

BRAVO!!I hope you continue with a critical evaluation of the "rare" shades - despite all the problems posed with accurate color determination as was pointed out by participants during the post-discussion - as that would be a real contribution. |

In my experience dealing with international calls, a morning US time call works best (very early for California) for most (morning US, afternoon Europe, evening Asia),

JeffS emailed me privately to ask about the images that I showed near the very end of last night's presentation, which were taken from a very old version of the Stanley Gibbons' Colour Guide for Stamp Collectors (possibly 1930s?). Jeff, I am pleased to inform you that the images I used came from TSF, which were posted by our former member Clive ( Anping), who sadly passed away in 2018. Here is the thread, and it is quite a nice one, in my opinion: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/4702/stamp-colour-keys-gibbonsI hope you will find this useful! As an aside, I was contacted by someone who saw the presentation last night and has offered to trade me one of these old color guides. The die for the stamps within the colour chart were engraved in 1922. I have read that there were 6 different versions, I'll update the colour chart thread with more details over the weekend.

I received the same email. I noticed the membership to the BESG is free for virtual members. In the membership sign up, one is asked to create an account (user id and password) but not sure the purpose, What extra is available with an account. I have not looked around to find out. You can just provide an email without going through the membership creation process. The website is very clean and easy to navigate. bestudygroup.org/ |
