I'm beginning to wonder if philately is genetic!
My sister and I invited a cousin over for the day. She's a cousin by marriage, related to my brother-in-law who passed away a while back. While we were talking she mentioned that one of her hobbies when she was younger was philately. And when that big box full of Ireland and DWI arrived she was fascinated and wanted to look at all of it.
So why think genetics are involved? She's a Delano - as in Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

I am sure there a collecting gene but interests determine what they collect. You are not going interest someone in stamps unless they have a strong gene.

My parents never collected anything. I collect a lot. My wife's parents were inactive collectors. My wife only started collecting when we got married and her brother doesn't collect a thing. Our kids didn't grow up collecting a thing, my youngest daughter only started recently and it's not stamps. There might be a gene that makes you more predisposed to collect something, but it has nothing to do with stamps specifically.
