I recently acquired this strip of 4 for the 5th Levant Fair which was held at the new Exhibition Grounds in Tel Aviv. The Levant fairs in the 1930's were held nearby on grounds which had fallen into disrepair for the main part and had various uses during the war years and beyond. The stylized camel, featured on the advertising labels and a feature at the old fairground, can still be seen above the entrance gates to the Exhibition Centre, today called the 'Expo Tel Aviv International Convention Centre' which is also the location for most of the International Stamp Exhibitions. The first 3 Levant fairs were held in Tel Aviv. As far as I can ascertain, the 4th Levant Fair was held in Bari, Italy in 1938 due to the Arab Revolt in Palestine. Some nice information with nostalgia can be found: www.israel21c.org/how-tel-avivs-levant-fair-came-to-host-eurovision/Tel Aviv celebrated it's 50th year in 1959 as can be seen on the labels. Interesting that for this Levant Fair, there were no English inscriptions. Londonbus1

JeffS.......no I don't think so. The mythological Flying Camel was the term used in all the searches I made. It was designed by Aryeh Elhanani back in 1932 for the first Levant Fair as a symbol of East meets West.

Here's a couple of road safety propaganda labels, at least the block issued by the National Road Safety Council. Still looking for the boy playing football ! The caption reads:"Playing games on the road is dangerous"

The 'Emergency Committee to Save the Jewish People of Europe' was set up in 1942 by underground Military fighters from Palestine who went to Europe and then the USA to seek help and raise funds. Arthur Szyk, who produced these Propaganda stamps was a founding member, as was Hillel Kook who was responsible for other organizations to help the Jewish cause. The stamps were based on the famous 'Four Freedoms' speech By US President Roosevelt in January 1941. They were printed in sheets of 32 (8 Se-Tenant blocks to sheet) and in panes of 4 for booklets. (The latter needs confirmation still) The Committee had offices in both New York and Washington.

Looks like another New Year Fund-raising stamps from the USA. This one for an organization in Tiberias by the Sea of Galilee.

Pope Paul VI became the first Pontiff to visit Israel in January 1964. Two souvenir sheets were produced by Christian Organizations in Jerusalem to mark the occasion. The sheets contain 8 labels positioned in the shape of a cross. Exist both Perf and Imperf. (Imperf shown)

Another from the hand of Arthur Szyk and as previously, for the Emergency Committee to Save the Jewish People of Europe. These were printed by Herman Jaffe for the National Poster Stamp Society. Printed in sheets of 50. There are marginal inscriptions in the large top margin. All edges to the sheet are Imperf. I only have a single, my pension will not go far enough to purchase a full sheet, even if I could find one ! Most Szyk items have become very desirable.

Here's a couple of road safety propaganda labels, at least the block issued by the National Road Safety Council. An update on the above block which I posted a few days ago. I have just been doing a spot of reading and I came across this stamp in a revenue catalogue !! Traffic Tax stamps were in use in Israel from 1950-1974. They were used on: Life Insurance Policies Car Insurance Policies Police Traffic Accident forms Medical examination forms due to Traffic Accident Hospitalization forms due to Traffic Accident The block shown is from the 2nd series, Perf 10. It appears they have quite a high catalogue value !! There exists also the same stamp but 'with a long tab' which I will scan later. A number of 'long tab' varieties are listed in the catalogue. I mentioned in the earlier post (in quote above) that these were issued by the National Road Safety Council. The tax paid went to cover the Council's operating expenses. The value on the stamps shown is 10 Israel Pounds.

Another example of an Emergency Post to go with the Rishon-Le-Zion armoured car type shown before. Nahariya in Northern Israel was cut off from areas to the South during the War of Independence (1948). So local stamps were produced in a hurry and mail was sent by sea to Haifa, mostly at night. Most used on mail carry a 'Sea Mail' cancel. A good number of sheets have some interesting varieties but they are out of my price range, sadly.

Two Souvenir sheets produced in limited numbers by the Israel Philatelic Federation in 1987 to mark the 1st Convention of Israel Philatelists. The first sheet shows colour reproductions of the 1952 Menorah & 12 Tribes stamp while the 2nd sheet shows reproductions of the 1949 Flag stamp, issued for the 1st Anniversary of the State. Both were printed in limited editions of 550.
