Reading Melville’s 1910 (second edition) “Great Britain: Line-Engraved Stamps” I read that “In 1853 the small crown watermark underwent a slight modification, being rather taller and thinner”.
I do not remember reading this elsewhere.
I am wondering if this feature can be assigned to certain plates with certainty and more basically, if this second, modified SC type, is really distinct. Logically, Alphabet II imperforate reds will show the modified watermark. Am I right?

Hi Karniaoutakis , in Stanley Gibbons Great Britain Specialised Stamp Catalogue, Volume 1: Queen Victoria, it states that 'The watermark 'bits' were affixed to the wire gauze of the paper mould. The small crown bits were hand-shaped of fine brass wire, consequently small differences of shape and size are encountered.' This might be the explanation for any perceived differences. There is, otherwise, no mention of any other type of small crown watermark. Daniel
