I've just about finished sorting my Austrian collection - it's not huge but you have to start somewhere! I have a lot of reasonable quality stamps, multiple copies of some, and I want to start sorting the copies into categories, especially with regard to watermarks and perforations. I just received my first ever watermark detector (a Lindner Stampscop) and have used it a couple of times so far, with not great results. I'd appreciate any comments on what I can expect to see. Obviously some will be clearer than others but any tips/pitfalls would be great!

The watermarks on austrian stamps are easy to see without a detector. Just hold them against the light.
Problem is,that only few stamps in a sheet show parts of a watermark. So luck is needed to find some.

Forgive me but I didn't quite understand, the detector doesn't work well, or you don't know exactly what to look for..?

Thanks, that makes it easier to understand Please note that I just went through 200 classic Austrians and they were all unwatermarked so you have to check in catalog prior to see which ones have a wmk. René |
