Stamp collecting can be a lonely pastime at times, especially if you live in a smaller community without a large number of nearby collectors. I often wonder how many fellow collectors have spent quality time examining your collection. Secondly, are you security conscious and therefore reluctant to let others know what you have? I get much enjoyment examining my own collection but I can think of only three other collectors who have actually looked over significant parts of my hoard and it seems a shame not to have more opportunity to both show this collection and see what others have assembled. I think it would be difficult to put an exhibit together from what I hold, so I'm denied the pleasure I'm sure others get from exhibiting at stamp shows. I'd be interested in the experience of others.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Interesting topic nbstamper . Other than showing my collection to a judge to earn my Boy Scouts collectors badge in the early 1960's I think I have had only one other collector that has ever seen my collection. That was 25 years ago or so when a friend I met at a Toronto auction decided to do some trading with me. He brought his duplicates to my condo for me to go through and he took mine home to select what he may need. It worked well with our stamps exchanged being almost of equal value. Occasionally I have shown friends the stamps I have from their home country but none of them were collectors. This is the first forum or site I have ever joined and so it has been fun sharing some of my items with all of you and seeing what you all have. I have never thought of doing up an exhibit for a stamp show or fair. To be honest I have not even spent any real time at a stamp show. I did drop by a CAPEX once but mainly to sell a bunch of US mint for a fraction of face value to an American dealer that I was told would be there and buying.

Reid I share your posted views and agree 100% I believe you have a nice collection (stamps), so do I and am proud of yours (what you have shown us) No experience in sharing besides TSF right now. From a smaller town than yours, I will never hit the big Shows !!....300 miles way and we do not have an Airport here, so I am having fun and that fun will continue Some day, I might (might 2X) fly to a big show but my stamping life does not depend on that Just thought I would share...hoping english speaking members would understand (being a french Canadian) René

I sometimes truly wish that I could browse another’s collections and share mine with them. Yes - it is a bit lonely . I made one video a while back showing one of my albums and I think I might do a few more. Has anyone else tried this? If yes, I’d love to view your videos.

nbstamperI agree 100% with your comments.I used to take some of my albums of French Colonies, postmarks and cinderellas to my local stamp club but there was no interest at all.I even invited members to my house to see my collections but again,no interest. My wife tells everyone I collect stamps but again,a complete lack of interest. I enjoy sharing posts here on this forum, and I share recent purchases with a fellow member a couple of times a month on Zoom. The idea of showing my collections on a video sounds interesting.

Don´t know any collectors around here. But there is still a stamp-shop nearby.(not the only one in this town) Showing stamps to other collectors here on TSF and for some time now on "Last Dodo",who develop another on-line catalogue.

I guess the UK being a small island with a mid to high population per square mile it is easier for most of us to find a local stamp club where participation means show and tell. This season we have 15 meetings (the 1st is a bourse, 2 are Auction nights) but the other 12 will have a show up on the club frames, sometimes a guest from another club , often one or two of our own members with a whole evening and at least two where we encourage as many as possible to bring along a topic eg recently we had Maritime, and the annual Alphabet night is always fun . This year we are back round to letter K. kings, Kenya, Canadian cork cancels letter K. Scottish towns Kirkcaldy, Kirkcudbright, Kilmarnock, Kurdistan, Mountain K2 Etc
In addition I am travelling this month with my Tobacco /anti smoking to the Glasgow a thematic club and to Solihull near Birmingham in April, and sharing a display to the Moray club in Elgin. Samoa with Robert Louis Stevenson. The annual Congress of Scottish Philatelic societies will be in Perth in April when other clubs will display, and as we in Aberdeen are the hosts next year we have to find 50 frames ( each of 16 pages) from our club.
Lots of opportunities to show and let the air circulate through or collections.

I have been collecting since the late '70s and have never shown my collection to anyone. The nearest stamp club is probably 100 miles away. To my knowledge I have only met three stamp collectors (a local doctor-now deceased- who once sold me his set of Scott catalogs, a prisoner who I happened to see looking at his stamps soaked off envelopes and stuck into a photo album, and our very own JeffS at a stamp show in Houston last year).
As for security that is huge concern for me. I'd hate for some meth head to learn about my collection and burglarize my home and take off with my stamps.

I only ever showed my collection to relatives or visiting friends at home. I love when I get the opportunity to do that, though. I have toyed around with the idea of making some displays for a stamp exhibit, but never devoted the time to do it. But now, I post my new treasures on TSF!

I would use the term solitary rather than lonely since solitary is a good aspect. The Internet like TSF can reduce the lonely aspect if that is an issue. Is there a difference between sharing here at TSF rather than in person with locals?
I have little interest in having someone look over my collection especially since it is really not special. I do not chase scarce material and want to show off what I have. The closest stamp club is 30 min away and meets at night so not convenient. I usually am more interesting in HOW they collect.
Now, I have scanned all my collection (6.7 GB) and in the cloud so I could share online if I wanted to show but not interested in an exhibit at the moment to tell some story.
