Thursday, March 30th, at 6:00 PM EST, the British Empire Study Group will present a Free Zoom program entitled:
'Hugh Jefferies, Stamps and Other Stories of the Big Bad Wolf – a Fireside chat'
We invite you to a candid discussion with Hugh Jefferies, the editor of the Stanley Gibbons Catalogues.
I’ll be co-hosting the program along with Joan Harmer (of Harmers International). Our presenters for the evening will be Hugh Jefferies and Steven Zirinsky
Registration and additional program information can be found by selecting the following link: madmimi.com/s/6c79d51
It would be wonderful to see some of you there. An open discussion will follow the presentation.

Excellent, Rob ( REL1948), thanks for posting this! I got my email invitation yesterday, and I have already signed up. For those who have not attended one of these sessions before, listening to Hugh Jefferies talk about SG, stamps, and his vast philatelic experience is well worth the effort. He was featured in a BESG program a year ago or so, when I was still in Oxford, and I stayed up past 01:00 (1am) local time because he was so interesting! The other cool thing about him is that if you want some specific info about SG catalogue history, he is a fount of knowledge, and he does respond to personal emails. I was able to learn some important things from him about the history of the Cape Triangle listings, which I am planning to publish in my next article. Anyway, Hugh is a philatelic treasure in his own right, so I hope some of you will attend to see for yourselves!

I attended the BESG webinar with Hugh Jefferies. Hugh came across unpretentious (the ivory tower was mentioned) and once allowed to speak in his slower casual style, it became more enjoyable. Much of the discussion was about color and shades. This is an area I tend to avoid because of many reasons mentioned in the webinar. He admitted in some cases specialists are more expert in some areas because they have many more samples to use as reference. He said he was open to adding new material (something about Aussie State perfins) but not about going back to fix some aspects. It should be no surprise that catalog makers are often reluctant to correct sins of the past since it would often upset collectors and dealers especially around catalog number changes. As I heard it, SG did not have the resources to update the SG Specialized QEII catalog. He did not up to date on the Deegam catalog work. A lot of work was disrupted by COVID. Quoting in full to move to the BESG thread.

I created a copy of Al's ( angore) post in the Whatcha thread and moved it here, so that it could be found with the program announcement. I am sorry to say that an important work deadline intruded on my plans, and I was unable to attend. So, I will await the video on YouTube to see what I missed. I hope that all of those who did attend enjoyed a good program!
