Hiya all,
I bought some Liberia stamps from eBay a few years back and have recently been going through them again to put them in the right order. I was comparing them to the catalogue I use (stampworld.com) when I came across some weird buggers!
If someone could tell me how to add a photo I’d be grateful 😅😅

Figured it out! Hopefully the links work. I took an awful photo but I think it illustrates the issue. The stamps are from 1918 and titled LOCAL MOTIFS. The “issued” colours according to stampworld.com are on the right with the weird coloured versions next to them on the left. Additionally, the weird ones have a strange , small pattern stamped on the back which I’ve drawn as it’s too fine to show in the low-light I’m in right now. The weird ones also have a small red, overprint that looks like 6S. If anyone has any ideas please let me know 🙏🏻 ibb.co/YdTHw04ibb.co/sP3Csb5

Cannot say anything about the marks on the backside. However the shown stamps are quite ordinary. The overprint at the upper left makes them service stamps. Many of these were printed on regulars, reissued in new colours. Again nothing extra-ordinary.

Ah great thank you! What do you mean by printed on regulars??

Also, what’s a service stamp? How can I find out when these were printed? Sorry for all the questions!

Hi sunshinerai and welcome to the forum. You might find this link (click on the word link) to be of use. The stamps with that particular mark are Official stamps, that is for use by Government departments. By the way, although your links do work, the idea is to actually place the image directly into your post. You must be almost there but since I use a slightly different approach, I cannot advise you how to complete the process. Hopefully someone else can help you to do this. Do keep posting. All best wishes, Daniel

I guess Service stamps were issued for use by various government departments on Official mail. Accounted for separately from stamps sold to the general public.
India for example had Victorian , Edwardian and both George’s stamps overprinted OHMS or SERVICE and the independent post 1947 India post issued separate series of stamps inscribed SERVICE.
New Zealand used the word OFFICIAL as an overprint for the same purpose.

sunshinerai , a description of the methods for posting images is available here. The BBCode for the image is what you want to include in your post.

The stamps were engraved in 1916 and printed from 1917 to 1919. They are also referred to as the 4th Pictorials and there are many overprints and surcharges to the basic set: Official 2c Red Cross Overprint 1920 surcharges 1926 surcharges 1936 surcharges 1936 Official surcharges A good reference point for these and other Liberian stamps is here: www.philib.org/stamps.phpI'm not sure about stampworld but traditional catalogues like Stanley Gibbons or Scott lists the official stamps.
