On Monday I ordered a Scott Specialty Binder and the USPS dropped off the package.
That's some kind of fragrant oil all over the box that seeped into the box. The cover of the binder got a small amount of oil on it.
I have no idea what this oil is, I'm not happy.
I called Amos and they told me to file a claim with the USPS. I tried to file an online claim. I added pictures to my claim, and the USPS website crashed. So, I submitted this again, but I needed to enter the amount Amos paid for insurance.
I emailed Amos asking them to please tell me what they paid for insurance.
Amos called me back after lunch and told me they would file the insurance claim and said they would send me a new binder and "Ukraine" sticker for the spine. I should throw out the stuff that I got.
I told them I would keep the packaging in my garage in case the USPS asked for it.
I wanted to see if I could salvage the binder. Cleaning the binder with soapy water did not yield good results. So I decided to use some isopropyl alcohol. That took the oil off, but there was green left behind on the paper towel, so the alcohol took some of the color off the cover.
The back of the binder has a grease spot on it, that I can't seem to get rid of.

Does anyone know if you can paint or dye this binder? I'd love to save this thing so it doesn't end up in a landfill. The spine is fine and so is the interior. Just the front on back with some issues.

I've had good luck removing grease and oily marks with "Goo Gone" on a rag. Not to be confused with another product called "Goof Off" which I've used for more extreme problems but it's basically a paint remover, so maybe don't try that on your binder. A small amount of Goo Gone on a rag is not likely to damage anything and may work to remove whatever is staining that binder, but test a small amount just to be sure it does no harm.
And I just remembered that Dawn dish detergent is famous for being a grease and oil remover while being very safe and essentially harmless (even used on birds fouled by oil spills). Maybe try a few drops of that on a wet rag first?
I really don't think that binder will take to paint of any kind which is likely to just make it worse -- and perhaps a mess. And if that's a Scott binder, then it's covered with the product they've used for years which is a kind of "vinyl-like" heavy paper or fabric they call "fabrikoid". It's somewhat washable if you don't go crazy with the amount of water. I often clean Scott binders with some hot water on a rag and maybe a drop or two of Dawn detergent. Never had a problem and it works for me. Alcohol and other such products work as paint removers, so nix them. Light oils like Goo-Gone may work. I wonder if a small amount of a light oil like WD-40 would work -- but I'd be a bit scared to try it on a binder like that.

Personally, I avoid any supplies that have had oily substance seep into it. It's almost impossible to get it completely cleaned. You think you've got it cleaned, put some white or light brown paper around it, 2 weeks later you see some more small oily stains on the paper. The oil absorbed deep into the supplies will slowly reflow to the surface. If you reuse the supply, you run the risk of accidentally putting a paper product (hopefully not a stamp) and find a small nasty oil stain on the paper product.
Anytime I see an oily stain or a mildew stain on a stamp supply -- out it goes. Just my opinion (course of action).
