IN KYUSHUObtained at a post office in Kagashima, 鹿児島中央郵便局.
[Date of cancellation: 22 March 2023.] This cancel shows 3 elements representative of Kagoshima: (a) The statue of the Japanese samurai and nobleman Saigo Takamori (西鄕隆盛, 1828-1877), native of Kagoshima and one of the three nobles who led the Meiji Restoration that modernised Japan. His statues are everywhere in the city of Kagoshima. (b) City of Kagoshima as seen from atop a hill. (c) Sakurajima -- Sakura Island, right off Kagoshima Port, on which the most active volcano of Japan is located. It is constently erupting and dropping volcanic ash. A popular souvenir of the area mixes this volcanic ash from the island and concrete to make all sorts of small sculptures and decorative objects.

IN CHUGOKUObtained at a post office in Hiroshima, 広島小町郵便局. This cancel shows a peace dove with the Atomic Bomb Dome, which is part of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park today. Originally, the building was designed by the Czech architect Jan Letzel in the western style and served as an exhibition hall. After the first atomic bombing in 1945, the ruin of the building remained one of the very few structures standing near the hypocenter. It now serves as a memorial of the bombing. Another pictorial cancel from Hiroshima, showing the A-Bombed Dome, the cenotaph, the Hiroshima castle and a maple leaf.
[Date of cancellation: 6 August 2023. Anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing of the 1945.]

Unlike the other pictorial postmarks (called '風景印', 'fukei-in' lit. 'landscape cancel') I shared earlier that are available at Japanese post offices for a long period of time, this pictorial postmark (called '小型印', 'kogata-in', lit. 'small cancel') depicting Doraemon in crew costume is only available for one year, between 1 December 2022 and 30 November 2023. It was offered to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the inauguration of the Doraemon Tram on the Manyo Line, which started operating on 8 September 2012. [Date of cancellation: 8 September 2023.]

To commemorate the 2nd anniversary of Gundam Manhole Project that aims at installing colourful manholes of Gundam design throughout Japan, currently from Hokkaido to Saga prefectures, Japan Post is offering 2 pictorial cancels featuring Gundam characters and a landmark of the Gundam creator / director Yoshiyuki Tomino's hometown Odawara (Kanagawa Prefecture) for a limited time. (1) The iconic RX-78-2 ( click here to see the manhole in colour) (2) MSM-07S Z’Gok ( click here to see the manhole in colour) I am aiming to get these 2 pictorial postmarks on 5 November, which is Tomino's birthday. If someone on the forum also desires these cancels of limited availability, please contact me.

Today, steam locomotives have been largely superseded by electric and diesel locomotives, but in Japan, some steam locomotives still continue to run during certain time of the year on tourist lines, to give passengers a nostalgic feel. 'SL Banetsu Monogatari' (SLばんえつ物語) is one of them operating in Tohoku region, between Niigata and Fukushima prefectures of Japan. This commemorative kogata-in is valid between the train's operating period between 29 July and 3 December 2023. If you look closely, you can see in the cancel the model of the locomotive: C57 180.

This cancel shows Children's Peace Monument and the A-Bombed Dome: [Date of cancellation: 21 September 2023.] On the top of the bullet-shaped monument stands Sadako Sasaki with a crane wireframe. Sasaki is a victim of atomic bombing who popularised the practice of folding 1000 orignami cranes in the prayer for a world without nuclear weapon. On the side of the monument stand a symbolic boy and a girl.

This Hiroshima cancel shows the cenotaph with two camphor trees tied with a shimenawa rope. Together the trees are called '夫婦楠', meaning 'married couple camphor'.
[Date of cancellation: 21 September 2023.] I am not sure if they are surviving A-bombed trees or not, but this is the cancel that nicely makes reference to both camphor tree and Hiroshima bombing.

This maple-leaf-shaped cancel is offered at a post office in Hiroshima prefecture that is close to the Miyajima Shrine. It shows the famous Torii Gate. The name of the post office literally means 'red (maple) leaf', whence the shape of the cancel.

Does the keyboard of your smartphone have all the "characters" of the Chinese and Japanese alphabets? Or does your real keyboard have all that? How are you able to type?

dorincard -- For Chinese languages, there are different types of input methods that can be roughly grouped into (1) phonetics-based and (2) morphology-based (plus a few laying in between the two). On my desktop, I used a set of phonetic alphabets that today are only used in Taiwan to input the pronunciation of the character I want, then choose from a list of homophones the right one I intend to use. There are enough of keys on a regular Canadian keyboard for these phonetic alphabets. On my smartphone, because iOS has removed for some years the keyboard arrangement I am used to type in Mandarin, so I have to use handwritten input method instead (this one os more morphology-based). The phonetic system used in Taiwan is called Zhuyin; it has been commemorated by a series of stamps recently issued. Japanese language comes with 4 notation systems: two of which are phonetic (hiragana and katakana), one is logographic (kanji), and the last uses roman alphabets. I think native Japanese people are more used to key in in kana, but I am used to roman alphabets. For instance, if I want to type the kanjis 沖縄 that means Okinawa, I have to press on the keys O-K-I-N-A-W-A, then the system will convert the spelling into kanji automatically (I can choose to stay with kana if I want).

Wow! Complicated. I'm grateful for the Latin alphabet. Also, I wish USA and Liberia would finally switch to the metric system. Keep it simple, and efficient.

These pictorial postmarks were available for 3 days during the annual stamp show JAPEX in the Asakusa district of Tokyo, Japan, that’s why one of the cancels shows the Kaminarimon (‘Thunder Gate’) of Senso-ji. Another one shows a messenger bird with Ukrainian motif on its wings delivering a letter. The written inscription reads ‘Ukraine Stamp Show’, because one of the themes of this year’s JAPEX focused on Ukrainian philately.
