For the auction of the Ukraine support maxicards my global team and I produced last year, I am conducting a survey on how forum members usually get their philatelic collectibles -- be them stamps, covers, maxicards, and whatnot. (Q1) Did you ever try to acquire a collectible by auctionning (whether or not you won)? If yes, please go to Q2. If no, please go to Q5. (Q2) Where did you participate in the auction and how does it work? Online platform, auction house, in-person auction, etc. (Q3) How many days did the auction last? And what's the maximal amount of days you are willing to wait for the auction to end?(Q4) What was (were) the payment method(s) accepted?(Q5) What's your preferred payment method(s) for an auction, if you were to participate in one?(Q6) What, from the logistical point of view, would make you wiling to bid on an item? E.g. the platform is easy to use, the visual is attractive, offers my preferred payment method, etc. If you have any other comments or concerns when auctionning a collectible, please feel free to write it down so I can get an idea behind the bidder's mind. Thank you all!

I just wanted to try an online philatelic auction to see what it was like. Personally, I didn't enjoy the experience and haven't gone back since. However; I participate in eBay auctions a lot in fact I've been buying and selling woodworking tools and stamps on eBay through auctions for almost the past 25 years. I have an ongoing love/hate relationship with eBay and PayPal, they're convenient but at the same time it's a screwing. Auction details on eBay are probably familiar to you already. In general I typically acquire 90% of my collectibles globally from wherever using the 'Buy It Now' method. Auctions are my last resort in general. Hope this helps. Rob

The bulk of my stamp collection has been built from auctions. I used to attend in person or leave bids at brick and mortar sites but over the past 5 years it has been pretty well exclusively on line. Like Rob REL1948 I have done a lot of buying and selling on eBay and I have a love/hate relationship with them as they continue to find ways to add fees for sellers. When buying on eBay I prefer auction format over BuyItNow although I do list by that method after trying auction format a few times. With on line auction houses a week is a good length although the one where I buy most better items is usually open for about 6 weeks. That is because their catalog is so big with in access of 6000 lots and they actually do mail out a paper copy of the listing in 2 volumes. The 2 auction houses I deal with at this time have no buyers premium which is nice. I am very trusting I guess and have no trouble using my credit card on line to pay and I also have PayPal. I hope this has helped Linda.

Hi Linda - ebay is addictive though I no longer buy from that source in the quantities I once did - my m.o. is to wait until the final 3 - 3.5 seconds - mouth going dry, palms sweating and heart racing ......... none of which is good at my age, but I still make the occasional bid. I do buy from real auctions, and in person, and this can be a way to get bargains, especially if the auction house is not normally known for selling stamps. A lot of my material comes from U.K. boot sales and charity shops - I try to ingratiate myself with the ladies who sell, with friendly chat and humour - it seems to work and I've had some worthwhile material. But ultimately I'm a low end buyer now - I've done the £200 - £400 for sets of stamps - and now spend my pension on more practicable things. It's the chase of course that gets the adrenalin going - and I love a chase. I pay via Paypal and plastic, and my oh usually tells me how much each month I have to spend on my addiction. Hope my reply not too flippant for your requirements.

Linda, I buy and sell on ebay, the selling being duplicates I acquire from buying larger collection lots either in person at Auction houses close to where I live. Theses auctions last just a day and I pay via my bank account. If I cannot attend in person I register with the auction house and bid on line and on some occasions leave absentee bids via online access. Payment again from the bank account. Due to postage costs on large lots I only buy from the local Auctions houses so I can go and collect.

This should be fun!
(1) Yes...if I didn't I'd be out of luck. I have no stamp dealers nearby. Stamp Auction Network is my life blood!
(2) Here is where I buy:
a) I have Premium account at Stamp Auction Network and have bought from about six different companies. All the transactions went great. All the transactions had to be shipped to me. Bidding was on-line and was for a set number of days. b) I buy at hibid.com on a regular basis. Again, all the transaction are sent to me. I usually do a search, sort it by ending soonest, then bid on the stuff ending within the next 24 hours. I've gotten some nice stuff out of that place but shipping can be hit or miss. Some companies really sock it to you and some charge a fair price. When I do a search, I also remember to ALWAYS hit the SHIPPING AVAILABLE button to get rid of the SHIPPING NOT AVAILABLE sales. c) ebay....I'm pretty particular on what I buy on ebay. I have about 3 or 4 trusted sellers now that I buy plate blocks from. (edit: I am also a seller on ebay as firesteel_surplus. I sell surplus vintage computer, video and audio equipment...mostly...I didn't want to sell anything stamp related...but I might be getting into FDCs....)
d) Stamporama...this is a smaller venue but I've gotten some great deals on plate blocks. I have a couple of sellers that I buy from on a regular basis. e) Hipstamp and Delcampe. I have accounts at both places, but I use them more for researching prices of FDCs.
3) Auctions can last from a few days to a month. I'll put longer term stuff in a watch list until it gets down to the last couple of days then I'll bid. Most of the time I prefer waiting to the last day to bid.
4) Credit card or PayPal. If they don't accept that, I don't bid.
5) Credit card or PayPal. If they don't accept that, I don't bid.
6) If I find something I want bad enough, I'll jump through quite a few hoops to get it if I feel it is worth it. But...I'll have to want it....REALLY BAD. Otherwise, I'm just looking for stuff for my collection. If I find it, I'll go for it. I'm not too concerned about visuals or anything else. After dealing with govmint websites on the full time federal level for 30 years, I can get around anything on the web now with no problem!
My credit card gets used a LOT with on-line sales and I've never had a problem.

Ease (and security) of payment is a big plus. For American buyers from European firms, wire transfers are too much of a pain.
For auctions, I can always find something tempting on SAN or Philasearch.
I don't have the patience for the auctions on Hipstamp, but have bought a lot of stamps through them, as well as Stamps2Go.
Ebay has become too frustrating to navigate. Combining postage on orders is no longer a simple task. Also, items I look for tend to be, well, ambitiously priced.
APS circuit books and local bourses supply more than enough stamps for me to process, so I rarely search on line these days.

(Q1) Did you ever try to acquire a collectible by auctioning (whether or not you won)? Yes.(Q2) Where did you participate in the auction and how does it work? I fairly regularly participate in online auctions on eBay, but I also attended in-person auctions when I lived in Oxford, where they were held on a monthly basis by a local dealer. I have also participated in catalogue auctions with UPA, also located in the UK.(Q3) How many days did the auction last? And what's the maximal amount of days you are willing to wait for the auction to end? Most eBay auctions end in less than 10 days. Some of the catalogue ones from auction houses will be active for a few weeks. That's about as long as I would want to wait, I think.(Q4) What was (were) the payment method(s) accepted? Normally credit/debit card or PayPal. I have occasionally done a bank transfer when in the UK.(Q5) What's your preferred payment method(s) for an auction, if you were to participate in one? Credit card.(Q6) What, from the logistical point of view, would make you willing to bid on an item? E.g. the platform is easy to use, the visual is attractive, offers my preferred payment method, etc. Ease of use of the platform is probably top of the list. eBay does a very good job on this, as most times it is easy to track the auction to receive notifications, especially as the end is approaching. And when the final moments come, I can bid from my phone using the eBay app. for whatever else that eBay may not do as well as everyone would like, they have made it very easy to track auctions and place bids. Linda, please see answers above in blue. For what it's worth, I think that convenience is a big factor in all this. If it was a hassle to track an auction, place a bid, or make a payment, then I would probably just forget it. The only way I would put up with all that is if the item was a holy grail of sorts, otherwise, it wouldn't be worth it, at least not to me. Hope this helps!

(Q1) Did you ever try to acquire a collectible by auctionning (whether or not you won)? If yes, please go to Q2. If no, please go to Q5. Yes, frequently.
(Q2) Where did you participate in the auction and how does it work? Online platform, auction house, in-person auction, etc. I've only been to one live auction that was only an auction, and that was many years ago, in one of the grubbiest hotels I've ever set foot in. It's like the floor had been painted with cough syrup. I've been to auctions that were within stamp shows, but never stayed to the end. As a certified Highly Sensitive Guy, it can be hard for me to stay in crowds all day, and I'm more likely to get caught up in the competition and overbid. (I suppose bidding could be called a form of gambling, but I've never gambled except for penny-ante rummy in college and 15 emotionally vacant minutes at a slot in Atlantic City, and I have no desire to get in a characteristically frenetic frame of mind.) I've never been informed by phone or email that I won something in one of those auctions.
(Q3) How many days did the auction last? And what's the maximal amount of days you are willing to wait for the auction to end? The mail or internet ones, 30 days or more, usually. The in-person ones, one or two days.
(Q4) What was (were) the payment method(s) accepted? Check or cash at the in-person ones (I'm not sure about credit cards at all of them), credit cards or sometimes PayPal at the online ones.
(Q5) What's your preferred payment method(s) for an auction, if you were to participate in one? PayPal (preferred because it's an extra layer of obfuscation) or credit card. I've heard of alternatives to PayPal, but I've never explored them.
(Q6) What, from the logistical point of view, would make you wiling to bid on an item? E.g. the platform is easy to use, the visual is attractive, offers my preferred payment method, etc. I don't participate in foreign auctions unless they take credit cards or PayPal. Getting a transferable check or money order is beyond my energy level, and the one time I tried cash ($20 in a certified letter to a republic whose citizens are not known for excessive or rampant dishonesty) the guy tried to rip me off. (I think he might have been impaired intellectually or psychologically.) I've won a few things at the Karamitsos auction house in Greece and they're very gracious and professional. If I have trouble with the language and think I'll misinterpret something, or if the Web site is obscure to the point where it looks amateurish or even designed to be difficult, I'll stay away.
Hope that helps.

Not negative - just the way I feel about this thread which has not helped me in any way - when you want to buy something...........it is more complicated than your responses René

Hi Linda, I've been to a few stamp shows and never really bought anything of signifigance. With the shutdown of the pandemic I looked at aution houses. And settled on using ebay. It was smaller steps. I don't like looking at newly listed items. Things take too long and require too much memory. So I tend to hover over auctions soon to close, like the last day. I think everything has been paid with Paypal. I'd rather just use a credit card though. I don't always feel safe with Paypal. I need to feel it's a fair price for something I need without obtaining too much of what I don't. Organizing for selling is a pain. I'm not a big player though. Too many stamps require lots of time.
Best to all.

Please believe that I didn't mean to steal your secrets away. I am doing this survey among both collectors and non-collectors to figure out the best auction platform for the Ukraine support maxicards my global team and I produced last year. It's meant to raise funds for Ukraine relief effort, so obviously, I want to maximise the net proceeds that can be donated. Right now I have 3 options: (1) use eBay's platform (2) have Charity Auctions Today to customise a 1-year platform for this cause (3) entrust the auctioning of these cards to the Vancouver-based All Nations Stamps and CoinsForum member's answers will help me decide between these 3 options. #3 would be the easiest for me to handle, but my worry is that they seem to use an old-fashioned kind of platfom (the bids are entered by hand and not live, etc.) that I at the age of 36 have never experienced before. I don't know how well the non-collectors would feel about it. I need to attract more non-collectors to increase the market demand (the higher the demand, the higher the final price that will be realised) because my maxicards are 'non-traditional' and non-FIP-compilant, not every 'regular' collector would want to purchase them. So finding a balance between what collectors are accunstomed to and what non-collectors would be willing to try is an important step in this project. I hope my explanation gives you a little bit of sense of security. And I totally understand if you don't want to respond to my survey. No obligation! As for the forum being 'public' -- this forum is not as 'public' as, say, Postcrossing, because one needs to login to see the discussion threads. (Stuff posted on Postcrossing forum can be seen by outsiders who have no registered accounts. That's why on the project's website, I put the Postcrossing forum thread instead of TSF's ... Rethinking it, I think I will put a link to TSF too because this is where it all started.)

Hello, Linda. Here are my answers: (Q1) Did you ever try to acquire a collectible by auctionning (whether or not you won)? Yes. (Q2) Where did you participate in the auction and how does it work? It's a monthly online auction held by a reputable stamp house in France with whom I do frequent business. (Q3) How many days did the auction last? And what's the maximal amount of days you are willing to wait for the auction to end? The auctions are up for three weeks. I would go up to a month in length. (Q4) What was (were) the payment method(s) accepted? Payment by credit card upon delivery (because I'm a good return customer). (Q5) What's your preferred payment method(s) for an auction, if you were to participate in one? Credit card suits me fine. (Q6) What, from the logistical point of view, would make you wiling to bid on an item? The online format and several weeks duration lets me think through which items I might be interested in bidding on, and at what price. The auction engine allows you to enter a maximum bid, and will automatically bid for you if other bidders manifest themselves, notifying me by email at every step. Also, if a bid happens very close to the end, the bidding for that item stays up for another 5 minutes after the last successful bid, so sniping can be somewhat avoided if you are monitoring the auction in its closing minutes.

This might not be a very valid comment as I suspect most of you collect expensive stamps. I started stamp collecting by buying bags of mixed used stamps and trying to catalogue them with Colnect. I still do this but I now also try and buy new issues from La Poste and the Royal Mail. I have from time to time wanted specific stamps and used Colnect, Stampword & eBay for that. Every so often I visit Stanley Gibbons in London and look at the stamps but they tend to be out of my price range £/$€50 is a lot for me to spend on stamps at once.

I don't know that there are any 'secrets', as to acquiring stamps, Rene. :-):-) If you have lots of money then you are able to buy expensive stamps - if you're less than affluent, then you can't. Places like ebay or any other online auction, and of course public auctions attended in person, don't favour those who may have any special kind of 'knack'. These are venues where all are equal in terms of ability - the only secret really is to have deep pockets. There is no secret except knowledge - and judging by the bidding competition there seem to be plenty of folk who always want the same stamps I want. You may benefit from using 'snipe' at online auctions, but if you fail then be patient and your desired stamp will appear again before too long;-);-)

Stamporama (singles) or ebay (collections). I have avoided auction houses due to premiums and shipping costs.

Humbug. I've just lost my most important auction site. It's anti-something day at Delcampe. Just checked and nope; can't log in. I've been fired. Anybody else get stung, guilty of living in the wrong state? Big irritating loss. I had to look up the case. Right; it allows the states to demand sales tax from on-line stores. Looks like Delcampe got a rough letter from Montana or somewhere. It easy to get a plug-in, but expensive. We'll see what Delcampe does. Dig this bad vibe:

I've attended shows and bought some items; also deal directly with a couple of dealers; but most acquisitions have been on eBay, but I take care to check out the dealer as best I can. I also buy on Hip Stamp and Delcampe; but the latter is a tad more cumbersome. I also buy in Brixton Chrome's weekly auctions and occasionally bid through SAN. I sell on Hip Stamp. PayPal is a great tool.

Thank you all! no never tried to acquire full collection. just bought on eBay bits and pcs. as mentioned eBay is easy to use. and the bidding is live. almost. if you really want something bad that is one place you can get it fast. ofcourse its not the best. but reasonable price and many many options.

(Q1) Did you ever try to acquire a collectible by auctionning (whether or not you won)? If yes, please go to Q2. If no, please go to Q5. - Yes(Q2) Where did you participate in the auction and how does it work? Online platform, auction house, in-person auction, etc. - I mainly prefer online platforms because it is convenient. There are no in-person auction houses near to my home and I usually don't get time to travel.(Q3) How many days did the auction last? And what's the maximal amount of days you are willing to wait for the auction to end? - Usually it takes about 7 days(1 week) to 10 days.I am not usually a fan of long duration auctions.I would like it,if it's less than 10 days(Q4) What was (were) the payment method(s) accepted? - Mainly PayPal,Credit and Debit Cards(Q5) What's your preferred payment method(s) for an auction, if you were to participate in one?(Q6) What, from the logistical point of view, would make you wiling to bid on an item? E.g. the platform is easy to use, the visual is attractive, offers my preferred payment method, etc. - I would like it if the platform is easy to use and can be accessed from my mobile.Visually pleasing aesthetics of the website would play an important role too.If you have any other comments or concerns when auctionning a collectible, please feel free to write it down so I can get an idea behind the bidder's mind. Thank you all!

(Q1) Did you ever try to acquire a collectible by auctionning (whether or not you won)? If yes, please go to Q2. If no, please go to Q5. Yes
(Q2) Where did you participate in the auction and how does it work? Online platform, auction house, in-person auction, etc. Vance Auctions (bid online...bidding has a time deadline)...Weeda Auctions (bid online...bidding stops when bidders stop)
(Q3) How many days did the auction last? And what's the maximal amount of days you are willing to wait for the auction to end? 30-60 days...It's hard to wait but that also controls my buying habit
(Q4) What was (were) the payment method(s) accepted? Credit Card, EFT
(Q5) What's your preferred payment method(s) for an auction, if you were to participate in one? Credit Card, Pay Pal
(Q6) What, from the logistical point of view, would make you wiling to bid on an item? E.g. the platform is easy to use, the visual is attractive, offers my preferred payment method, etc I'm interested in the item, there is a visual, the price is right

I've bought a few items on eBay, but my majority of stock came from a local seller, who I've dealt with for the last 30 years he buys collections locally and anything GB mint he gives me first choice, which I go through and take what I want then we haggle, always cash and let's me pay monthly if it's a big haul 👍

I buy 99% of my stamps from the STAMPS2GO site or HIP stamps. I am not confident enough in my decisions about committing money to a bid I may or may not get. You would think after 60 years of collecting I would have participated in at least one auction. So far I would rather do without the stamp than get involved with an auction. Nick
