While working on my post war Austria, I came across an overprint printed on the back, always a fun surprise! Anyways, I’m sure most of you are familiar with these - the post war shortages and need for postage meant overprinting existing stamp supplies. Several methods were used to obliterate Hitler’s unwelcome face and here are a few obliterate types from my collection, but there are many others. If you have any examples, please do share a picture. Here is an overprint on the back side And I finally found a copy of that elusive little 3pf brown that wasn’t sold with the others.

Ja,sure Hitler´s face was no longer welcomed, other than in 1938 ! However the overprints were not applied for that reason, but on the order of the soviet occupational administration. The shown stamp with letters on the back was not printed that way,but is a print-off (Abklatsch).

Oh thank you, salentin. I think I understand - heavy ink transferred the overprint to the back of the next sheet - yes? Is that what you mean by an Abklatsch or print off?

Some times called “offset” which technically is not accurate as offset is a printing process. More correctly , if pedantically “set off”.

This month’s sales paid for several Graz overprints with cancels. I’m pretty sure a few are fake, but some look genuine. A few are signed, but that isn’t any guarantee. I need to prune the extra mint hinged sets, too. Now if I could find affordable copies of the hi-value varieties. Ohhhh Santa! lol

This is my copy of the famous Scott 389Ni 1945ni never issued overprint 3pf (Austria) or Michel IVa (CV 100 Euros) and it seems more clear, even at 300dpi - ? René
