I use a range from Vario 1 to 6 in my albums, depending on the overall height of the stamps on a page. That means for most 19th C issues I use 6 row, switching to 5 row in early 20th C as taller vertical stamps become more common, with 4 rows becoming more common with the rise of se-tenant blocks in the 1960s. 2s and 3s for vertical se-tenant blocks and souvenir/mini sheets, and 1s for large souvenir/mini sheets.

I use the entire range from 1 to 8 but use way more 7s than any others. That may change one I get my Great Britain stamps in Varios, I think a lot will fit in 8s.

Thanks for the new thread, Al ( angore) With all due respect, I think that this is a bit of a silly question. Don’t most people choose the number of rows per page based on the size of the stamps? That’s what I do. I use the pages with the maximum number of rows possible based on the sizes of the stamps I intend to put on the page. It’s as simple as that. All that said, for the classic era, which I collect, I am able to use mostly 7 and 8-row sheets, which is nice from an efficiency point of view.

I selected all of them, though I mainly use 2, 6, 7, and 8.
2 of course is for covers and souvenir sheets.
Beyond that, I go for the most efficient arrangement unless I am short on the size I really need.
For categories where there are no major historical shifts or changes in printing technology, such as Ethiopia from about 1960 (change in stamp technology) to 1974 (the coup), I sort stamps by size. There were large-format stamps that could only fit in Vario 4, and many sets just a millimeter too large for vario 6, so I use 5s for those.

I reserve the stiff ones for pages with stamps of higher value, so they stand out when I flip the pages of a binder.

I have tried to standardize somewhat on a size to can be be reused later. . I tend to prefer the 5 or 6 row because it is the most flexible for me. I collect more modern so often have taller stamps. In many cases, the page is just a temporary storage so not dedicated. These are less "efficient" for smaller stamps but.I do not like stamps taller than the pockets.
Now, since I play with Machins (26 mm high) I do have 8 row pages for some of them. For my postal cards, I deal with 2 pockets mostly even though many work with 3 pocket.
Chris, since you use these in lieu of album pages I see using the size optimum for page.

In the specialised GB part of my collection, I use pages of two rows for cylinder blocks and pages of four rows for booklet panes. I have lots of both.
For everything else, I use pages of eight rows for definitives and pages of five rows for commemoratives.
There are exceptions for unusually tall stamps or unusually large blocks, but I've never needed any pages of three, six or seven rows. (But if I had more than a handful of KGV Seahorses or QEII Castles, I'd need seven rows.)

I just purchased 2 more 25 packs of 5 row. I prefer six rows (allows for title row, then 5 rows similar to album page) but pocket height is only 39mm so not ideal for modern general use. the
Vario: 2 pocket 128mm 3 pocket: 84mn 4 pocket: 63mm 5 pocket: 51mm 6 pocket: 39mm 7 pocket: 33mm 8 pocke: 29mm
