Great Britain, 1841, SG8 (BS7), Plate 18, Corner Letters R L. Four full margins with a near perfect Maltese Cross, showing partial bluing in the NW quadrant.
Plate 18 was put to press on September 16th 1841, registered on the 21st of September, withdrawn from press on January 19th 1842 and destroyed on March 5th 1842. The Plate shows no roller flaws, but the laying down of it gave rise to numerous shifted transfers, particularly on the lower half of the Plate. The word POSTAGE is somewhat spread on this example due to transfer shift. The Plate did not wear too well and 54 of the impressions had to be repaired by re-entering. Estimated number of sheets printed: 31,625
I was very pleased to have won this gem recently. It’s a difficult, first year of printing, Plate number to find in any event but even more so with such wonderful centering, cancellation and my initials.

I think that's the most beautiful Penny Red I've ever seen.
Alas, I can't even dream of owning something similar, because my initials are impossible.

Thank you so much Peadar Ruadh. I feel very lucky to be its steward. As you know, imperforate One Penny Reds with full margins and a nice cancel are the exception, not the rule. I'm trying to assemble a complete set of Plates for the Line Engraved Issue Imperforates from SG1-SG15 with the Check Letters RL. So far I have 70 different plates from the target group of 147 total. I'm sure I'll never complete it but every once in awhile I find another one and add it to the group. Some of them will either be impossible to acquire financially or by virtue of rarity. Rob
