I think this is part of a letter sheet. If anyone recognizes it, would you be kind enough to explain it to me. I just have it sitting in my album - no Scott (or any) catalog number and I have no idea if it is worth anything - but it does look cool. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks as always in advance. - Jeff

I found THIS which has the same image. A ;etter of receipt for the sale of alfalfa different denomination (looks like 1 F) The very first France postal stamps were issued in 1849. It could be this served as a 'tax' stamp, . Looks like the same embossed stamp interesting!

As with most early taxes they would have been raised to fund wars. The tax stamps typically come in pairs, one printed showing the tax rate and one embossed possibly as a security measure. They are usually found on stitched folios, collected together, with each folio having the tax marks applied. The documents would be Registry Extracts, Land Leases, Marriage Settlements, Writs and Receipts. Such documents, since they were necessarily kept safely, are relatively common. Here are couple of mine from the 19th Century.

Thanks everyone - now I know what to research and not worry about this being my retirement stamp. Still is an interesting piece for me. You all are great, as always - thanks so much
