Can anyone tell me what's going on with this stamp? It looks to have 3 layers? Is this a forgery? Here's the back.

Hi - the image looks like either SG 54 from 1857 or SG 81 from 1859 - but not U.K. - this example is from Victoria in Australia. Quite a complicated history - issued originally imperf. in 1854 then perf. at the slightly later dates I've mentioned. This one looks as though it has had the white corners cut away. Hopefully, someone from down under will look in and offer a better explanation.

The imperf was issued in 1854 SG.25. It looks like the perfs were done after assembling the stamp. Hence why I suspected a forgery. But is it possible it's an imperf that was modified at the later date when it was issued as perf?
Or could this just be a perf issue that's been stuck down on top of another stamp?

pass, but agree the first imperf printings are SG 25, and this would have been a fairly high value stamp at the time. I'm inclined to think this is one of the later perf. printings and some philistine, possibly a considerable time ago, has for some reason trimmed the corners thereby removing perfs. in those areas. Why the card backing is perfd. I've no idea - home made possibly? - but it appears the stamp has been stuck onto this backing. Maybe we'll never know the stamp's history.

I am tempted to soak it and see what it reveals.

yes, I'd agree worth a punt - as a stamp it's without value I'm sure.

It looks like an SG81, perforated, that's been cut to shape, that is, had its corners removed. The other layers have been added as a very crude repair.

So, this is the result post soaking. Such a shame the corners were snipped.
