daniel, stainlessb, I did not find any explanation in the Yvert-Tellier catalog about these "proofs" of modern stamps. They are normal in the manufacturing process of the final stamp, but I wonder how they appeared for sale at this low price. (I guess they are in large numbers) Are they officially issued?...are they mentioned in the catalog and I didn't notice?

Spink|Maury has a section on "Essais" which klso includes "Epreuves" (tests), however they only cover the early Cérés, Napoleon, and Sage issues, (and a few other). I htough Y&T did also, but maybe I haven't looked well enough into ( I don't own any)
I "think" that the "Epreuves" are essentially 'proofs" as "preuves' translates to proofs. As to how they are handled/release to the public I do not know.

George, gstamps you can find more information here Specifically, the ones that I have shown are mentioned at the very bottom of the page. They are referred to as Reduced Size Deluxe Proofs and are printed on card. they are stated to be "quite common; they are printed in several thousands copies and are sold in "first day" Post Office or by subscription". They normally sell for a few £s each but these were sold in lots of 10 very cheaply. I don't know why but I'm not complaining Daniel By the way, on that site you can click on the arrows top left and right for much more information on other kinds of French proofs. The site is copyright Giorgio Leccese.

Thank you Daniel, danielInteresting information...I understood that they are officially issued in thousands of copies, unlike the old "epreuves de luxe" (200-300 copies). Hence the low price.
