Greetings All,
My name is David and thank you for allowing me to join this forum. I live in Washington State. My mom and grandmother got me hooked on stamp collecting in my youth. However, when I hit high school, the hobby went into a box and placed in storage. 45 years later I went to visit my parents and we went through the storage. And there it was, my collection as well as my mothers (she collected in the 1950's) and grandmothers (she collected in the 1930's). I've spent the last two years (off & on) combining, researching and developing the collection into one nice presentation. I'm here to learn.
Thanks! D

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Hi David, welcome to the forum from a neighbour on Vancouver Island.
Three generations of collectors all in one sounds amazing. I hope you're able to share more about your collection as you find your way around here.

Hey David - if I remember correctly, aren’t you a luthier? If yes, we have another active member into guitars - gatodiablo , at least I think he wrote about building them? Or amps? Come to think of it I seem to recall several members ( renden maybe?, stainlessb?) mentioning guitars. Stamps and guitars — is that a thing?

Yes Philatelia I am a luthier. I build and repair stringed instruments. I looked up the names you mentioned, but I don' know any other luthiers in the towns they have listed. But perhaps I will get a chance to meet them online here. Thanks

Welcome to The Stamp Forum David (drmellow), It sounds like you've had a wonderful family sendoff into philately! You've joined a friendly group that's always ready to answer questions or do the research to try and obtain an answer.
I see that you are a Luthier. I studied classical guitar making under Master Luthier Richard Schneider after I got out of the Air Force in 1969. I studied for just short of two years at his store 'Estudio de la Guitarra" in Detroit. Those were heady days with the likes of Juan Serrano, the Flamenco guitarist as a teacher at the Studio while he was developing some of the leading edge designs in guitar acoustics at the time with Dr. Kasha. I found that the dedicated work of a Luthier wasn't going to be my calling in life but it introduced me to fine woodworking and exquisite hand tools which I've continued to collect and use up to the present.
I look forward to seeing some of the gems from your 'family' collections. Rob in Michigan

Welcome drmellow! Since Terry called me out, I am a luthier wannabe. I’ve been learning to build guitars for some time (both acoustic and electric), and lately have been learning to build and repair tube amps. Doubt I’ll be hanging out a shingle anytime soon, though.

Wow, David, drmellow - you join to talk stamps and we pounce on your guitar interests. But, if you want to talk stamps, too, you’ve come to the right place. Strange though - there must be a link or propensity for guitar and stamps joint interests. My dad was a stamp collector and also played guitar - gypsy jazz style - and actually was taught by Les Paul when he was a teen-ager stuck in the hospital in Chicago. My niece now has his beautiful guitar. He also played harmonica and dabbled with accordion - which he gave to me. I tried to learn to play that accordion, but, well, my female anatomy kept getting in the way. LoL
