I received this tidy cover which enclosed a recent purchase. I had not previously noticed, or paid attention to, the matrix code printed at the right end of the stamp. I recall similar for the UK being shown here and replacing the old Machins, but passed over them and their purpose.
According to an online Linns page, I gleaned the following,
"Stamps include a matrix code on the right side. When scanned with a smartphone, these bar codes provide basic shipment tracking information, as well as information about the stamp and design. Deutsche Post first issued stamps with these codes in February 2021 and plans to include them on all new stamps through the course of 2022."
If a member more knowledgeable in this area can add to this brief text, I welcome hour input.

JeffS in a more considered approach to the matter of postmarks appearing on the matrix codes, Deutsche Post changed the colour of the ink used for the postmarks from black to blue. This avoids the problem that we have in the UK where multiple matrix coded definitives cannot be postmarked since black ink would interfere with the matrix codes. Of course, as we all know, the postmarking of stamps has become less frequent throughout the world. Daniel

daniel daniel that’s the first matrix German stamp I’ve received in the mail. All new to me and my non-worldly existence. But I’ve received several of the blue cancels.

I collect German stamps and remember the first time I came across one with the hideous matrix. At first I didn't know what it was. Not very appealing, if you ask me.

Starting with the new issues released this month, stamps from Finland now have these matrix codes as well
