What I collect: Postboxes, French & UK Stamps
|
Post by alexcandy on Sept 23, 2023 8:15:59 GMT
Hi
Please forgive me if this is too basic a question.
Monaco postbox are very similar to the ones used by La Poste (France). Does La Poste operate the Monaco postal system and issue stamps for Monaco?
Also
Is there anywhere online that sells Monaco stamps. I had a look at the La Poste Monaco webpage but it seems a bit basic.
Thanks in advance
Alex

You are correct that the stamps issued by Monaco are very similar to those issued by the French La Poste. I actually have documented on TSF several instances where some unscrupulous minds have disguised Monaco stamps as French ones and used them (fraudulently) as French postage (see for instance here, here, here, here, here, here, and here). The Monaco stamps are indeed printed by the same printer that does the France stamps (and also the Andorran French Administration and the French overseas territories stamps). I usually mail order my Monaco stamps directly from the OETP (Office d'Emission des Timbres Postes) in Monte-Carlo. Haven't tried their website.

What I collect: Germany in all its facets since 1871 (especially German Reich used including postal statinoneries, used), USSR, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Denmark, France. I design all album pages for my collection myself and partly make them available to the general public for use.

No. The philatelic program of the Principality is decided within its borders. They just outsource the printing of the stamps.

Please excuse the supplementary question: Does the French Post (apart from the decision to issue the stamps by the Principality of Monaco itself) organize the mail service in Monaco, or is this the responsibility of the Principality with an own postal organization?

La Poste Monaco is actually part of Group La Poste, the parent company of La Poste (France).

I don't know for sure but it certainly looks like Monaco uses a lot of the infrastructure of the French postal delivery system. The postal codes in Monaco follow the French five-digit format and have been assigned the 98xxx sector, as if Monaco was département number 98 (which of course it is not: France has 101 départements, numbered 1 through 95, plus the overseas départements numbered 971 to 975 and Corsica which used to be 20 and was split into 2A and 2B). Also, in the south-east corner of France where I live, as I documented already here, mail to Monaco is considered "local". This is not the case for Andorra, even in its neighbouring département of Ariège (but I think instead Andorra has this sort of arrangement with the Spanish post).

When you say considered local is this just for the postbox or also postage cost? Does a letter sent from the south of France to Monaco cost the same as a letter sent internally in France? And is the postage to send a letter from say Paris to Monaco the same or more than from the south of France to Monaco? Thanks Alex

When I mean local, it is for mail distribution purposes. Letters put in the "local" slot will go to the regional distribution center, while other will be sent further afield. As far as the mail rates are concerned, the letter rate is the same from anywhere in France to anywhere else in France (with the exceptions of packages to the overseas territories and départements for which there may be surcharges), and the same rate as for metropolitan France applies to mail sent to Monaco. In the reverse, you will find that the Monaco stamps have rates that match the French ones, for mail sent from Monaco into France, although the rate for mail that stays within Monaco is cheaper.
