Moderator Note: A handful of posts on William Caxton and his contributions to printing were merged into this broader thread on the Printer's Art, hence the result that this initial, older post appears ahead of the later first post in the new thread.Full Thread Title: The Black Art of Printing.... and Ancillary Trades
Hi, a customer of our has a son who has a small museum dedicated to the history of printing and also runs a business producing lithographs etc on a Garamond Common Press. This is his tribute to Caxton printed on the Garamond press and using first day of issue commemorative stamps, Thought it would be interesting to share it with you,

........and ancilliary trades. I have started this thread in here as opposed to Arts as, although printing started off as an art, it progressed into an industry. My interests and my collection involve anything to do with printing - printing presses, famous printers, state printing works, typography, stamp printing, books, newspapers and paper making etc. Here we go - in no particular order Issued on 14 March 1983 to commemorate the 390th anniversary of the first local printing press in the Philippines. Issued by Belgium on 23 June 1973. Dirk Martens set up his press in Aalst in 1473 Issued on 22 May 1958 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the National Printing Works. (Brazil) Stamp issued by West Germany on 9 April 1991 to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of Lette Foundation - set up to promote careers for women. Women compositors setting type. Issued on 1 April 2001 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of first Danish stamp (Denmark) The 4 kroner stamp shows Martinus William Ferslew, designer & engraver The 5.5 kroner stamp shows Andreas Thiele, printer There are four stamps which, when placed together, form an image of the first Danish stamp as shown on the accompanying First Day Cover

Paper making Although archaeological evidence suggests that a form of fused silk and paper substance was in use in China around 100 BC, the first record of true papermaking is the report to the Emperor Ho Ti of the work of a Chinese court official named T'sai Lun in 105 AD. His work to produce paper with hemp, mulberry bark, fishing nets and rags, earned him the title of patron of papermaking throughout China. Issued on 1 December 1962 in a series 'Ancient Scientists of Ancient China' - Ts'ai Lun (China)

To save starting another thread I will post my William Caxton in this thread, there are only a few items. Thanks for your posts, stampsmurf, and thanks for your comment above. If it is correct that there are only a few items attributed to Caxton and his role in printing, then I would think that the best course of action here would be to merge these few posts into your thread on the Printer's Art. The idea behind having a dedicated thread, in my opinion, is that there should be sufficient material for future posts to carry on a discussion about Caxton and material related to his work. If there really isn't enough material for many more posts beyond what is already here, then I would like to merge these posts into your existing thread, which I think is broad enough that there can be plenty more posts from other members on the subject of printing and printers on stamps, and it seems clear that Caxton belongs in that area, too. Please let me know if you agree. Thanks!

An old Intaglio Press from Enschede of Holland. It was used at the Guildhall during London 2010, A Festival of Stamps to reproduce the £1 UPU stamp of Great Britain issued in 1929. This picture of the press was used by the British Postal Museum and Archive for their special Presentation Packs sold in a lottery in January 2011.

Barcelona, Catalonia, fall of 1914. Due to the WWI, there's not much work for Catalan printing works. On a time without unemployement pay (like in today's Europe), that meant the misery for ther workers and their families. So, some artists decided to draw some cinderellas, print them at a very good printer (Oliva de Vilanova, Barcelona) and collect some money to help. Hence the text "Socors, per a la vaga forçosa" (help for the unvoluntary strike).
The cinderellas have a face value of 5 cents of pesseta (our currency up to 2001). So, the whole shet, sold for just a pesseta, about 1/166 €. A fraction of today's value.
But, for me the one that I like the most is the iddle printing machine:
Which,by the way, was the work of the ownwer of the Oliva de Vilanova (Barcelona, Catalonia) printing works: Víctor Oliva

Cursus, that is another reason why I collect stamps. Not only are many of them works of art in their own right, but also a slice of social history as in these stamps from Catalonia. I certainly never knew of this small episode in history. Thank you.

Issued on 19 June 1963 to commemorate the centennial of the Hebrew Press in Palestine. Issued in sheets of 16 each stamp shows a nineteenth century compositor at work. The background of the whole sheet shows a page from the first issue in 1863 of Halbanon newspaper, giving each stamp a different background. I have this full sheet, but oddly enough I have no single stamp which is more common
.
Update on 24 November 2023: I have now purchased a single stamp, although it is from the middle of the sheet and therefore has no tab
