Is that a good way to find and buy collections Or how about thrift stores like Goodwill etc

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

southafrica1 I made a living for about 20 years going to thrift stores, yard sales and estate sales. In all those years I only bought stamps at a yard sale once and that was a bunch of mint newer Canadian that I did not need for my collection but was great for postage as I bought the lot for well below face. I have no recollection of ever finding anything worth buying at thrift stores. I did make several great buys at general estate auctions here in Toronto. All that being said, there is no harm looking but I would not spend a lot of gas expecting to find old collections that way. My best source has been through networking with people that know I am a collector. Antique dealer friends have referred people to me knowing I would be fair. I have also bought junk/job lots at smaller stamp auctions. Those are few and far between these days.

One of my best hauls was an estate sale. A buddy’s mom had passed and he reached out and asked me to come take a look. A year later, he had another box for me he found in the crawl space.

My wife and I frequent junk/antique stores in the small towns around here and I have only found stamps in 2 places (over a hundred stores/visits). It took digging around to find them. I was not strictly looking for stamps, one spot I could not tell they were stamp albums initially. These were over priced but I did find a First Day Cover album of the US birds and flowers stamps and got a good deal on it.
It might be possible to find some stamps at places like these but if it is all you are looking for you will probably be disappointed.

I do a regular visit to a yard sale or garage sale. In Belgium they organise so called thrift markets in the open air or in streets which means there are a lot of people offering and selling all kind of goods including stamps :-)
It really depends what you are looking for but I did some interesting finds in the past. It helps a lot that I am a worldwide collector which makes it easier to find stamps I like.

If I find something in 'car boot sales' or 'flee markets' it is priced in the sky. People read about expensive stamps in the news and therefore think that all stamps are rare and expensive. The same with antique shops, hilarious prices. I bay from small Norwegian auctions.
