Today I started sorting and checking on stamps I had soaked off envelopes just to make sure I had them. Naturally I did not know the Scott number so I went to Google and searched for "united states postage stamp George Washington 1 cent" The search returned a bunch of pics showing the stamp but to my surprise the values were starting at $500.00!!!!! I almost fell out of my chair and as I scrolled down I found some as high as $5000.00!!! I must have missed the message that this stamp was so valuable. The Scott number 804 and not a word about 804 having any special significance. Just so I am not crazy this is from EBAY www.ebay.com/itm/195809143771?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28&srsltid=AfmBOooFRNeTyi8Vg2nTToF9oyFXNuxAQE_53nXxVzbx44A_xElIKdJqC5wThis had the asking price of $3000.00 Why would this stamp be worth so much. On the URL from a google search there is a pic of the stamps clearly torn from a corner of an envelope that has 3 crumpled stamps for a mere $200.00. Wow, this tells me not to trust anything from any bay. Nick

The simple answer to “why would it be worth so much?” Is “it isn’t” that guy located in Colombia , has a feed back score of 1 and he lists 4 other penny stamps at $$$ prices. he is trying the launder money I’d guess. look at the seller information and feed back , check out any other items he has for sale , you will find he knows nothing about the stamp and has plucked a number out of the air So is either stupidly ignorant or working a scam……of course there will never be a legitimate buyer of such a penny stamp at that nonsense price . often folks selling bric abrac , or second hand stuff will find the odd “old stamp” and assume it must be of value where the genuine collector or trader knows the true market price.

I was thinking the same exact thing but then I see there has multiples of that same stamp for high bucks. So I was thinking something was odd about that stamp, some rare defect. I have a couple of those stamps in y give away box. I was just blown away by how many entries there for that sane stamp all for big money. It really is a shame that Ebay will not allow the APS to have any input into these bogus entries. So Buyer Beware is certainly the motto for buying any stamps off of ebay.
Thank you for confirming what I thought was a scam.

There are many such examples -- some, perhaps, being used for laundering money -- others likely a result of ignorance and/or greed. While the feedback score may sometimes be an indicator, the below examples show that isn't always the case. Some of the other stamp listings from this seller (I didn't include the seller's many women's clothing listings).
