An interesting recent purchase. At first glance these appear to be examples of Harrison & Sons GB 24p Christmas stamps from 1991 but the Queen's head and the value are missing. Moreover, The House of Questa logo appears on the top left. So, what we have here is likely to be a trial printing by Questa to show off their capabilities. First mentioned in Glenn Morgan's Dummy Stamps issue 3, Winter 2006/07 see here, page 3. On closer examination, there is damage to the stamp on the left and double perforations. Almost certainly, this is an example of printer's waste. But, jump forward to 2014 and Glenn Morgan's Dummy Stamps issue 33, page 17, see here, and these exact same stamps are shown as having been sold at that time only for me to purchase them 7 years later.
Nice to have some notable stamps and at a cost of only £5.

Another interesting dummy stamp, shown as a corner pair. They depict Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg born in 1843. Four postage stamps were issued in Norway with this design in 1943 to celebrate his birth centenary. However, these are not proofs, they were produced in Britain in 1950 for printer Emil Mostue A/S in Oslo as test stamps when they were considering buying a new printing press from Timson in Kettering, UK, a printing company who also manufacture printing presses. Timson are still in business today and have a US outlet as well. Some of the test sheets produced were perforated by Harrison and Sons. These are imperforate examples.Scan_20210418 (2) by Daniel, on Flickr

Harrison and Sons produced Britain's first Christmas stamps in 1966. A competition was held for children to design the stamps and Tasveer Shemza won for her design for the 3d stamp, King Wenceslas and James Berry for his design of the 1/6d Snowman. For both stamps the Queen's head would be embossed in gold foil and over 160 million were produce of the 3d and over 22 million of the 1/6d. Printing these stamps resulted in multiple errors since the gold foil embossing proved difficult. Errors include missing gold foil, part printed gold foil (as per this example), shifted gold foil, missing T in T Shemza in lower margin and missing colours.
On the left we have a known gold foil test print on brown paper. Plus a part printed gold foil Queen's head on the 3d stamp.

Swiss PTT Trial Prints
In de61 's excellent and very informative post on page 1, he makes it clear that these are trial prints for testing rotary printing presses. From this part sheet, you will see the sheet number is 93,151. So, presumably, the print run would have been 100,000 (00000 to 99999), a very significant amount. Any value would depend on how many were released to the public. Again, from de61 's post, it was/is possible to obtain samples simply by making a request to Swiss PTT.

The Spanish items, are neither trials nor projects. They're just cinderellas, issued by the entourage of Juan de Borbón Battenberg (1913-1993) son of Alfonso XIII grand father of Felipe VI and pretender to the Spanih crown during Franco's dictatorship. He was exiled at Estoril (Portugal) and there was a campaign presenting him as a democratic alternative to Franco's succession. I remember seing these labels of Barcelona stamp shops windows on the late months of Franco's era (1975) . No one seemed to care that much for them....

I'm just posting a link to some info regarding dummy stamps. I haven't seen the link elsewhere in the forum & thought it might be of use to other members. I think most of the links go to PDF information. www.stampprinters.info/dummystamps.htm

McCorquodale and Company Limited was a printing company founded by George McCorquodale in 1846. This is described as a tender essay from 1879. The company is, perhaps, best known for printing British Air Letters. They were taken over in 2005.

Just a few items from my main collection. The first pair are proofs which I acquired for a snip @ auction without researching them. Gibbons mentions them in the Concise catalogue (price £750) (not cat value). Must have been de-ja vu because I was born not far from the place on the 2nd stamp & spent 20 years or so working near the place where the Mayflower left from, on the first one. The 2 orange stamps are phosphor trials stamps, (not as many people think, the forerunners of the Machin). There are other colours with the same design, orange being the scarcer colour. The stamps on the 2nd row are GB regional colour trials. The 5 stamps on the 3rd row are training stamps for training of counter staff back in the day?

Here is one of may favourite series from Great Britain. I now have the complete set of this series. One set though is on its way back to the APS Stamp Store. They'll issue a refund, no credit.
Post Office training stamps. Why did they do this? Just use pieces of plain paper instead! Ah well, nice to have anyway.

Associated Automation started off as a private company, Hall Telephone Accessories in 1921. They manufactured telephone call boxes, automatic stamp and ticket selling machines. They became a public company in 1928 and changed their name to Associated Automation in 1956. So, these stamps marked the 50th Anniversary as a public company. Presumably, they used such stamps to test their stamp machines.

Testing Labels were used by the Post Office from 1911. The first were produced by Harrison's using blank Crown watermark paper which was then overprinted CANCELLED in green to simulate halfpenny stamps and red for 1d stamps. These and other similar labels were not successful and eventually the green Target design, commonly referred to as the 'Poached Egg', was produced in 1935. Issued with GvR Block Cypher watermark on gummed paper. In 1937, after too many of the green poached eggs ended up being used for postage, they were replaced by grey versions clearly marked: For Testing Purposes Only These can be found with various watermarks: E8R, GviR, Tudor Crown, St Edward's Crown, Multiple Crowns and without watermark. A strip with offset printing can be seen below. A pink double version was issued with the Philatelic Bulletin in 1964. Finally, a Post Office test cover for 1971.

Danish Legion Feltpost Stamps issued in October 1944 The Frikorp Danmark was a unit of the Waffen SS during World War II up until 1943 when it was disbanded. They later became part of the SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment and three charity stamps were issued to raise funds for them. They are listed in Michel Specialised Germany under Private Issues 1939/45 Danish Legion. Three values were issued: 25 øre dark green, 50 øre dark blue and 1 Kroner orange red. A genuine set is valuable. These proofs, presumably modern, were cheap.

An original piece from British stamp designer Andrew Restall. This is a pencil drawing on tracing paper honouring Rowland Hill as a Pioneer of Railway Reform (Hill was also a director of the London and Brighton Railway, he lowered fares and expanded the railway). This design was similar to the stamps found on a sheet of 30 Restall essays, see here lot 1697, in a 2010 Corbitts auction, for the Rowland Hill Centenary stamp issue of 1979. His designs were not used.

Dummy Stamps : Switzerland (some shown before in this thread) Can you tell me more about the third row? I have a west german baloon post postcard from 1958 which has the red one attached to it, apparently upside down from how you have them, and I always thought it was supposed to be a balloon, as in, part of the balloon post.
