Is there any way to remove scotch tape from the face of stamps? Some people tape over the stamps and I do not know if it is possible to remove the tape without damaging the stamps. If there is a way I sure would like to know. Thanks, SouthAfrica1

I didn't think there was a way to remove scotch tape from stamps, or the residue and stains it leaves behind.

Lionel ( southafrica1) There is no remedy that I know of for stamps that have been mounted to pages with adhesive tape. Rene ( renden) has asked a potentially reasonable question (i.e., what kind of tape?), but it is most likely unanswerable. I imagine that if you have acquired stamps that have been affixed to pages with adhesive tape, there won't be any notation on the page describing exactly what type of tape was used or when it was applied. So, nothing to be gained there. My personal opinion is that stamps which have been affixed to a page with adhesive tape for any length of time greater than a few minutes are most likely irreparably damaged. Perhaps using a bit of modern adhesive tape, it might be possible to remove it from a stamp after just a minute or two without serious damage, but anything that has been left taped down for years is likely beyond redemption. For some of the really old cellophane tape, the adhesive will eventually dry out and simply fall off the page and the stamp, typically leaving a dark brown stain on both, which I have never figured out a way to remove. Sorry if this isn't what you were hoping to hear. Other opinions are welcome, of course.

I have never tried to remove it. When I come across stamps that either have tape on them or show the telltale signs of a rectangular brown stain, I toss them. Granted, these are the dirt cheap variety when they are in the best condition. Not sure how I would handle the situation with a formerly valuable stamp. I might get dressed up before I tossed it in the trash.

I have had some experience (expérience) with old (given to me) stamps, glued in such way - results were negative !! No additional opinion is needed René

I read Lionel’s question to refer to tape on the front of the stamp , not used to fix stamps to a page, I read his issue is with stamps that have come on a package or an envelope where the tape sealing the package has been stuck on top of the stamp. Either way there is no remedy.

Very good, Alex ( vikingeck ), you got me on that one. I re-read the original post, and you are quite right. Lionel does indeed seem to be asking about removing tape from stamps on a package rather than an album page. Apologies to all for my misunderstanding of the question. But as you stated, Alex, there is no remedy either way, and I totally agree with you on that.
Just as a point of interest, here is an example of what cellophane adhesive tape can do to both stamps and album pages when left in place for a long time. The tape used in this old US album had been there for years, and by the time I received it, the adhesive had dried out, which resulted in both the stamps and the bits of tape falling off the pages. The tape permanently stained everything with which it came in contact, the unsightly brown color that you see below.

I have seen a you tube video once, where a stamp was repaired, using a paper towel, and a warm iron to release the gum. (Never tied it) Be careful in what you do, test on old stamps / paper first. I post my examples, but do not support any methodology, just for your information........

Hi southafrica1I managed to remove the adhesive from some German self-adhesive stamps and the labels from the windows with a product bought from my country: You can find the manufacturer at: www.rexxan.com and I think it is a similar product to the one I use:

thank you one and all for your replies to my query re taped over stamps. I was referring to stamps on covers mainly where the person had tape over the stamps and wondered if they were save-able...but alas it seems not. But there was some very good info in your replies so thanks again. SouthAfrica1

I will try Unisolve, or Pure Citrus, to remove strong Scotch tape from the face of stamps.

I use paint thinner for removing tape from stamps - that's the same chemical I use for removing cancelled self-adhesive stamps from their backing envelope. I also use paint thinner for stamps stained by tape used as homemade stamp hinges - it will sometimes leave a hint of a stain around the outer edge of the tape's former location but will usually lessen (or entirely remove) the translucent stain caused by the tape.

Either way there is no remedy. I interpreted his question the same way. I annoys me to no end that tape is used on an envelope. I think the census so far….no way to remove tape from either the front or the back. i have had tape come off when soaking from paper. But there has always been a a sticky residue left on the stamp. I think the census so far….no way to remove tape from either the front or the back. Soaking taped stamps in paint thinner removes scotch tape and its adhesive will then come off with just a bit of rubbing from a finger. Ryan
