Hello from the UK.
A few years ago I was given my late Father-in-laws stamp collection - thousands of stamps - that he collected from when he was a young boy (early 1930s).
Now I have just retired and have the time to do it justice.
I used to collect stamps myself when I was younger but that collection disappeared in one of my parents house moves. I remember I had a lot of Indonesian stamps for some bizarre reason.
I'm hoping to get some advice here on cataloguing the collection.
I have purchased a Stanley Gibbons World Stamps "simplified" catalogue from 2004 (good enough I hope).
I have many questions.
Fallen at the first hurdle - I don't get the SG catalogue number system.
I started with my Father-in-Laws British stamps and of course the Penny Black. I see that the SG number else where is GB SG1 (or SG GB1??) but there is no "1" in the catalogue. The Penny Black appears to be "2".
Why doesn't the SG catalogue have a number 1?
Anyway... I hope I learn a lot here.

#3 is the penny Black (grey-black) (worn Plate)
Hope that helps

The Gibbons simplified catalogue really is just that. I would recommend spending some time going over the introductory pages that you'll find in the front of each of the volumes, especially the "Information for users" and "Guide to Entries". The former will tell you what sorts of things get a listing and what do not. I may not agree with all of their choices ("Appendix" countries), but overall it is a good catalogue geared toward having a face-different collection. I am slowly moving to it from Scott for my general world collection.
In the Gibbons Commonwealth and Empire catalogue, the Penny Black is given three distinct numbers based on shades of black as determined by SG. These are 1, 2, and 3. In the info on listings in the SotW set, it mentions that only the cheapest variety of any particular design is given a listing. In this case, that is SG 2. When there are multiple options available for a particular design/denomination, the editors decided that their target audience would usually aim for the cheapest version.
Hope this helps.
Dale

Statesman Stamper,
Thanks for the answer.
So the simplified catalogue is not full? I though simplified meant less or more condensed info on each stamp.
Oh well.
I may get the one you mentioned as my Father-In-Law has a lot of British stamps.

thunderbird There is an old chestnut saying for a stamp collector "You are only as good as your literature" (or stamp catalogue) That is not intended to be condescending, but simply a muse to reflect on.
Now I personally survived 6 years happily on Stanley Gibbons "simplified" until, like you, I was constantly finding, discrepencies with information and prices.
I abandoned Gibbons, and jumped ship to Scott, simply to enable me to use Album Pages (Steiner) and to easily locate items on ebay US as a more lingua franca, with the people I was dealing with.
Scott has its problems too, so you can see I still invest in Gibbons catalogues (to access information, where Scott fails)
To illustrate the above, here is my page from STANLEY GIBBONS CONCISE, Observe the difference in available information , and PRICES !
Now this doesn't mean you need to buy the latest catalogues, but to keep and eye out for the better catalogues, that are a few years older 5-8 years perhaps. (I buy Gibbons catalogues from Libraries, when they update their catalogues) Hope this helps

Hi and Welcome from NZ
The SG Simplified 'Stamps of the World' only list one stamp of a particular design / color / denomination - the commonest one ie the cheapest CV one. The more specialized cats list 'almost' everything - ie varieties / shades / wmks etc
Your example is classic 'simplified' - SG2 for the Penny Black is the lowest CV one of the 3 shades of 'black'.
SG1 is Intense Black CV SG 2020 £525 SG2 is Black CV SG 2020 £375 SG3 is Grey-black (worn plate) CV SG £500
So the simplified cat lists SG2 simply because of their policy as per above.
