I read in Linn's this week that Scott English, Executive Direction of APS, reported that 59 percent of APS members are not a member of a local APS chapter but does not mention if that would include TSF or affiliates.

For some reason which now escapes me, I didn’t join the APS until 2000, despite the fact that I had been collecting since the 1960s.
I became an APS Life Member around 2016 or 2017, around the time I joined TSF.

That does not include affiliates. We do not have full data on affiliates to make a determination. On topic: I am a Life Member of the APS - joined in 2015

Originally joined in 2002, but did not maintain continuous membership. Picked it back up a few years ago when I got back into the hobby.

Sometime in the early- to mid-1990's I let my APS membership lapse for several years. Then I rejoined in 1998 and have kept a continuous membership since.

There's no shame in not being a member, daveg28But you may want to look into joining. Especially if you are considering doing any philatelic research, they offer excellent resources. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I waited a very long time to join, and perhaps the reason I didn't sooner is that my Dad, who started me in collecting, was never a member, and I generally took my cues from him. I started to move beyond what he taught me as the years have gone by, and I have found APS membership to be helpful in my current pursuits. I have used their expertizing services, found excellent info in the expertizing database, used the Research Library (APRL) resources in my research, and I have bought stamps through the APS Stamp Store. I also think it is worth supporting organizations dedicated to philately, because if we collectors don't do it, who will?

Not a member directly, but my maximaphily group MACSU is indeed an affiliate of APS. Did you even know that about MACSU?
I prefer it that way, under the circumstance$. I am not reCHOIRed to join directly, so..."papa, don't PREACH". 😉 MAXIMUM CARD STUDY UNIT OF NORTH AMERICA The Maximum Card Study Unit (MACSU) is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to the creation, collection, exchange, enjoyment, display, and study of Maximum Cards, by spreading the knowledge of Maximaphily among its members. The activities of MACSU are planned and carried on entirely by the volunteer services of its officers and members. MACSU is Affiliate # 106 of the American Philatelic Society, Chapter # 67 of the American First Day Cover Society and an affiliate of the American Topical Association."
🤣The text above contains affiliate links (or just names). 🤣

I honestly have a hard time justifying a membership for myself. I don't have any really valuable stamps, despite the length of time I've been collecting, so I have no need for expertizing. Nor do I have any need for research material beyond what I can find out on a Google search. I've done this hobby solo for a very long time. You folks are the people who I converse with over my stamps. However...I am willing to hear reasons why I should reconsider having a membership.

No worries, daveg28APS membership is not for everyone. If your interests don't make it practical for you, then so be it. In my case, it seems that my interests have taken me more in the direction of activities with which the APS can help. So, I have found it beneficial. You and some others may not.
