I have Word, so I haven't tried others, but I expect Notepad might show the basic text? Probably not much in the way of formatting, though?

I recommend libreoffice writer (part of a complete office suite). It can handle docx and works under windows and linux and costs - nothing.

Notepad won't work for you - it just gives you this sort of garbage. I use LibreOffice. It opens and edits Word (.docx) and Excel (.xlsx) files, and I think also handles Access databases and other stuff as well. If you hold your tongue right I think you can also edit .PDF files, but I haven't tried to cross that bridge yet. LibreOfficeRyan

my paternal grandmother DID have 15 children, that defies understanding ! My great-grandparents (the Norwegian ones) had 16 kids. My Mom has somewhere around 70 first cousins just from that side of the family - the Estonian side then adds more cousins to her mix. I know all my first cousins' names - I bet my Mom doesn't! Easier for me, though, I only have 8 of them ... Ryan

Glad you found a solution, Rod. Just in case someone comes across this thread in the future, I'm pretty sure Google Docs will open Word files too. Saves downloading LibreOffice for only 1 or 2 files.

Now apparently, Google docs, is now Google Drive and I have no link to Google drive in my email platform. It is supposed to be in a black bar above the email page.

Microsoft Word's docx file format is actually a zip file. This applies to xlsx (Excel) and pptx (PowerPoint) files The text and images are separated. The images are in the media folder. I used 7zip to view contents. Example: FICC newsletter (Word)
