Someone at our local post office wondered if the Buffy Sainte-Marie stamps and booklets could be recalled in view of the controversy over her heritage. The individual had no special intelligence on the matter; but was just speculating. Post offices still have stocks of these stamps. Does anyone know of any precedent for this?

It was issued very late in 2021 (November I think). I don't have an up-to-date Unitrade catalogue, so can't give the number. One of our two post offices in the Kennebecasis Valley still has a large stock of the booklets.

Thank You djcmh !! never bought this 2021 stamp as I do not really buy Canada's new issues - politically, the rest is as is and Unitrade does not even has a mention on her stamp René

A quick by the by, I saw the 2021 year book on sale at my post office just now. Guess who was on the front. I asked the SDM employee if I could get it autographed, she had no idea who Buffy was.....zero.

This is a tricky question. I have been wondering about this too lately. I feel kind of embarrassed to have possessed a booklet of stamps and a FDC of her since they were out 2 years ago ...

Canada Post did a trick on its clients !! Nothing we can do.......too late - I do not own any and I was not a big fan René

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I have watched Buffy's response and have heard First Nations people coming out in her support. I do not collect modern but would not feel embarrassed about owning these if I did have them. As a long time supporter of CBC I felt in this case they went too far.

OK. Please forgive the Canadian far from home. What is the controversy about?
I actually own a couple of her albums on CD and enjoy her music. Is this a case of having to separate the artist's work from the person?

Oh well. Thanks. Doesn't matter to me though. She sings about indigenous issues, rather well I find, and for me the message counts more than the messenger. And I know from bitter experience that the CBC is not always the paragon of journalistic virtue it pretends to be. Plus I thought that in Canada, it was now all about who/what you identify as, not who/what you are.

I had never paid much attention about the life of Buffy Sainte-Marie but after reading the investigation made by CBC Television, it is quite interesting to see how someone can become an icon even if her roots are questionables! I'm also surprised that Canada Post would not have seen this before issuing the stamp. At the end of the day, she is a good artist and probably have done much good in supporting the First Nations. False representation though, should not be acceptable. www.cbc.ca/newsinteractives/features/buffy-sainte-marie

CANADA Post is to blame, the discussion is closed (for me) - more important matters for our Forum. René

I have watched Buffy's response and have heard First Nations people coming out in her support. I do not collect modern but would not feel embarrassed about owning these if I did have them. As a long time supporter of CBC I felt in this case they went too far. I said I felt 'kind of embarrassed' because of want of a better word. As an artist, I actually don't think one needs to be something -- an indigenous, a homosexual, a victim of child abuse, etc. -- in order to speak from the point of view of that something, so long as the artist acknowledge that his / her account is not first-person, and the account is (to some extent) fictionalised. And I agree with FDI and others on that Buffy had done good to First Nations through her music despite the recent controversy, but it's false representation -- when it's consciously done -- that is questionable. I don't think we should be discussing about whether Buffy had made a conscious effort at false representation, as everyone has his/her own way to evaluate how to determine the veracity of the whole thing. Buffy is not Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond who, besides 'embellishing' the biological parentage of her father (whether innocently or not), had done academically unacceptable thing such as claiming to have earned a degree many years before she was actually conferred such a degree.

I saw Bob Dylan and Buffy Sainte-Marie at different shows in 1965 at the Masonic Temple in Detroit. Dylan totally knocked my socks off, Buffy not so much, I never quite warmed up to her distinctive vocal style (same for Yoko Ono). Just my experience. I know she spent much of her life in service to indigenous peoples. Rob
