One delightful aspect of philately is that we are constantly learning. One of the ripple effects to learning something new is that all of a sudden you’re dragging out your old piles of duplicates looking for varieties, cancels or other things that you didn’t even know existed when you relegated those stamps to the “sell, trade, toss” piles.
I’ll share one of the numerous times that has happened to me. Colnect was the trigger - they correlate valuable info from catalogs that I might not have. A good example is the Finland specialty catalog LaPe. I didn’t know that there were so many watermark varieties for many early issues. That triggered an immediate forehead slap and a dig into all of my duplicates hunting for watermarks - and I found a bunch, too. Awesome sauce!
So let’s hear your stories. What is something that you learned that had you dusting off those glassines and stockbooks hunting for new types? Your story might be an eye opener to another collector and will trigger yet another philatelic treasure hunt. Have fun and happy hunting!

when I was working through my father's dealer's backstock of Canada from the 1950s-1980s I had my Unitrade next to me and found a good number of plate flaws and fluorescence varieties to add to my collection
Alas no missing phosphor bands...

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

As I have posted before I do not keep many duplicates around. There are only a few hundred in stock book and a small recipe box in 102 cards or in glassine envelopes. Back in May 2022 I had posted the following: For some reason this evening I decided to look through my small selection of duplicates and came across this strip of 3 Canada small queen Unitrade 35 with an R.P.O. cancel that I had paid no attention to before. From a posting on this thread I was able to follow a link to BNAPS Railway Post Office Study Group and got all the information about the postmark. It is from the Wellington, Grey & Bruce Railway - Southern Extension ( W.G & B - K & P). I do not pursue Railway Post Office cancels but over the last few years I have started paying closer attention to nice postmarks so this strip went from duplicates to my Canada small queens collection.

Have fun and happy collecting! Thanks Vince ( stanley64). We actually had this discussion when I first posted this strip last year on the Canadian Railway Post Office thread. I actually printed off the page from the BNAPS book that is in the album with the stamps. The Kincardine & Palmerston I believe would be described as a spur line of the W. G. & B.. The RPO cancels is tempting but the hunt for the Queens County, Nova Scotia cancels is keeping me busy enough. It was a search for information on a cover from there with an RPO cancel that first brought me to TSF in 2021. Now I am addicted to this forum.. Happy collecting and New Year to you as well Vince!
