I recently received a mailing from Canada (Calgary, Alberta) on which all of the stamps were canceled for once. The cancel below caught my attention as I don't remember seeing anything similar before. My question is: Is Dominion RPO a postal station in Calgary, and, more specifically, what is RPO an abbreviation for? Thanks.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

RPO= Railway Post Office. I was not aware there were still some of them.

hdm1950 Surely not a railway post office in 2023, doesn't look like a RPO cancel, but so far it is the best answer I have. Thanks. hdm1950. Don StampHinger

In this instance, I believe Dominion RPO is the Retail Post Office at Dominion Drug LTD, 665 8th St SW, Calgary AB T2P 0V0.

Interesting, I didn't know any Retail Post Office that uses a circular cancel. Ours in Montreal are all rectangular, and says 'BP' (bureau de poste, post office in French) instead:

What I collect: If I have a catalogue for it, I collect it. And I have many catalogues ....

Interesting, I didn't know any Retail Post Office that uses a circular cancel. Here's a repost of a photo taken by rod222 back in 2014 from the Canada stamps thread. We've had that same round design out on this end of the country for quite a while now. The question of the RPO acronym came up then too, and I also answered "retail post office" until I actually looked it up and found out that the correct term, according to the Canada Post glossary (which has moved since then, I had to fix the link in my reply), is " Retail Postal Outlet".
