I finally got into a position where I need an ultraviolet light and I found this forum posting from back in 2020 that was quite informative: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/6801/shortwave-uv-lamp-recommendationSo based on that I found theses two units today on that big auction site that some people love and some people curse: Yeah...I bought both the LS-4 and the LS-7. Couldn't pass them up being in the original boxes. The LS-7 was sold as "not working". He said it would not turn on. I asked him if he held the button down for a good long second or two and he said "No. I'm guessing I was too impatient." I'm guessing that is why it is "not working." I took a chance and bought it. It also came with the optional battery pack.
I don't think I got the stand with the LS-4. I may have to fab up one for one or both of them.
I'll tell you right now I probably overpaid for the LS-7. It got just into 3 digits. The LS-4 was a bit more reasonable at $30 shipped. For all of you buying these in the past for $5...good luck with that today.

I like my LS-7 so much I bought a second one in case my original borked. I haven't needed it yet, but I sure use the original a lot and I'm sure at some point some part of it will fail. Or I'll drop it, or have some other stupid attack that will disable it for good ...
I bought my original unit new at least 30 years ago, the second one was found on eBay. It's long enough since I bought it that I'd have to go on a search mission to find where I put it.

I have two LS-4 units that I used for camera photography. The built-in notch filters for shortwave do not seem to be as good (not as narrow bandwidth) but it works for basic checking.

Here's what started me in the quest:
I bought a few hundred 1036a 4c Lincoln plate blocks. According to my Durland catalog, some of the plate numbers came in both tagged and untagged (of which I have). I'm hoping that means I need this ultraviolet light to tell the difference between the two.
I read something last week though when I was researching USPS postal tagging that the post office didn't start tagging stamps until into Scott number 1400s....and I can't remember the exact Scott number. Obviously that can't be true if the 1036a is tagged. Right? Mike

Since the Liberty series stamps were used and printed well into the 60s, some later printings were tagged. These varieties were given a suffix to the untagged version.
