Colleagues: I have a stamp that I cannot identify. It is not in great shape, which makes identification more difficult. Each of these stamps has an identical description, except that there is a small bit of color variation: 155 and 191: Cardinal 166: Rose Cardinal 177: Violet Cardinal 202: Pale Cardinal My eye certainly is not good enough to determine which this is, especially given its condition. There are also some paper differences: 155 and 166: white wove 177: hard white wove 191 and 202: soft porous Again, I cannot tell which this is. Does anyone have any guidance for me--on identification and/or on how to catalogue if I cannot determine which stamp it is? Micah

What I collect: 19th Century US, High denomination US (> $1), 19th century covers US, Indian Feudatory States and most recently I acquired a BigBlue [with about 5,000 stamps] and pristine pages.

It is definitely not 177 or 202 for multiple reasons.
If it is a soft paper it is 191 and if it is hard paper either 155 or 166. All three are pretty common. Based on the color or your scan, I would guess 155 but looking at the perfs I would say 191. So without having it in hand ...

From looking at the perfs and seeing the paper strands I would say it’s 191. Personally I look at these issues under a microscope to see the paper difference and even then it can sometimes be hard to determine for me. As what was said it’s hard to say for sure without it in hand.

I would also say 191 based on the pic -- but agree better to confirm in-hand. I'd be surprised if it wasn't soft porous paper.
