Hi I'm a semi retired stamp enthusiast, who started out as a schoolboy many years ago collecting stamps on approval before lapsing slightly until I took up the reins of postal philately some 25 years ago. Now with more time on my hands I look forward to discovering more about this incredible hobby shared by so many people the world over. I love both poster stamps and 'proper' stamps, admiring the printing styles and techniques of older stamp items as much as modern day ones. My main collection involves the depiction of the bagpipe as a musical instrument in both art and as a folk instrument that's featured in countries across the world, not just Scotland, as well as all the interesting and amazing threads that lead off this quirky topic!

Bagpipes Hi there, I was having a real "senior moment" there, I checked my database, and 0 stamps turned up, I knew I had some as it turned out, I had "set visual filter" activated. Anyhoo, I re-did a global search, and found a few, Including a New York Times write up about "Oliver Seeler" you may know of him. (148 Bagpipe stamps 2005) also rivalry with Sean Stewart New Zealand....total Bagpipe stamps 240 (2005) Question: in the Virtual Bagpipes online link, they have a tiny stamp entitled "Rarest bagpipe stamp" or similar do you have a close up of that stamp ? or what country is the stamp / poster stamp / cinderella from?

By dint of great coincidence, last week I was listening to my Smithsonian Folkways CD of music from the former Soviet Union and one of the tracks is an old archival piece of Estonian bagpipe music. If you're a bagpipe stamp collector, then you probably know of this bagpipe stamp from Estonia. But have you heard bagpipe music from Estonia? It's a little bit different ... Welcome to our forum, I hope you have lots of bagpipe stamps to share! Ryan

Nice catch! Well done. Sean Stewart was the Kiwi, I would think it points to him.

Welcome to TSF bagpipesrus ; I too, look forward to seeing some of your collection. With your joining, I was reminded of a bagpipe player featured on a British Antarctic Territory stamp and need to re-double my efforts to fill that space in my own collection. For anyone interested and has a spare moment, an article that discusses Gilbert Kerr and his Antarctic performance can be found here.
The question is, was Mr. Kerr as uncomfortable as his audience...
Have fun and happy collecting!!
