On Thursday, March 7th, at 6:00 PM EST, (11 PM BST) The British Empire Study Group will present a Free Zoom program entitled:
"The Evolution of the Unitrade Catalogue” with Robin Harris
I’ll be co-hosting the program along with Joan Harmer (of Harmers International).
Registration and additional program information can be found by selecting the following link: madmimi.com/s/b9fee81
As always, our programs are recorded and available for FREE on YouTube (usually within 2 weeks following the broadcast).
For those members whose interests include British North America, you won't want to miss this program. As many of you know, the 2024 Edition of the Unitrade Catalogue may be the last edition ever printed???
It would be wonderful to see some of you there in person at the broadcast (say Hello). An open discussion will follow the presentation.
Rob

Drat & blast! I'll have to wait for the program to show up on YouTube - I registered for the seminar in the hopes that I would make it as scheduled but I failed in that regard. I await with interest!

I thought it was an excellent talk. Highly recommend everyone check out the YouTube re-broadcast when it's posted. Of the 19 editions that Robin Harris was editor, I only owned 4-5 versions. But I was always impressed with how they were laid out and improved year over year. I love how he keeps adding things that make the catalogue easier for novice collectors to navigate, and yet continues to add more and more specialist information as well. I don't have a huge knowledge of single country catalogues but I am bold enough to rate Unitrade as one of the very best. I was fascinated to see his process for creating the catalogue! I imagine the Scott world catalogues are similar -- 100% built for print copies only. His design choices make for an excellent printed catalogue, but I can now see how it would be an almost complete redesign / rebuild to create a robust, dynamic, searchable website like Colnect and why it's an investment companies are wary of making. Creating a page in the catalogue isn't (conceptually) much different than creating a stamp album page. And knowing how many typos I can make on a single album page, it's a wonder that the catalogue is as accurate as it is. It's a testament to the editor's eye for detail. And it's not lost on me how precarious these publications are. The history he gave of past Canadian catalogues was so interesting, especially since many of the titles were short lived or infrequently updated. The consistency with how Unitrade was updated annually is something I took for granted. Yeesh, I'm going on a bit. All this to say, be sure to watch the broadcast!

The recordings seem to appear on the BESG YouTube Channel, about two weeks after the presentation. I guess that if you subscribe to the channel you will be notified or else check it every now and again. Clive

I am sorry to say that I got tied up with other things, and I also missed the live presentation. Luckily, I am already subscribed to the BESG channel on YouTube, so I should have no problem accessing it later. I have watched many of these presentations after the fact, including my own, which was a kick to see how I look and sound on video. Sorry for missing, Rob ( REL1948), but thanks again for helping to make these possible!
