I believe they are proofs of a draft.

Hey @sorch I have two sets both listed as Essay when I bought the sets and you probably know Danish just search Thorvaldsen Essay and you will see a lot of stampdealers call it Essay. Essays are stamp designs that were submitted to postal authorities in competitions designing new stamp and that ultimately where not used. Sometimes essay designs are altered only slightly and used, and sometimes they are entirely rejected by the postal authority. Proof is a trial printing of an acceptet stamp often printet i different colours. Reprints/Nytryk. A stamp printed from the original plate, after the issue has ceased to be postally valid. Official reprints are sometimes made for presentation purposes or official collections. They are often distinguishable in some way from the originals: different colors, perforations, paper or gum. There is Privately made Reprints but the value of these stamps is verry small. Official Reprints N5 8Sk Green dotted no burlag with original gum, as you can see it is cracked printet in blocks of 28 of 2 original plates, teh stamp was used in "La poste Danoise" 1924 to celbrate the 300 years jubilee. Some of the stamps was alos used in "Danmarks Frimærker 1851-1924 issued by Kjøbenhavns Filatelistklub I think in 150 nbr copies I have nbr 21 with two reprints MNH with original gum and they are verys scarce N4 and N5. N5

Seeing as they were never printed and having made the definitions of what is an essay, proof, reprint etc. We had to continue to call them PE = private essays. I have scans of Lasse Nielsens entire personal collection of essays, proofs and reprints while it was still intact (Before Bruun Rasmussen started to auction it off in bits) The crown jewel was sold for around DKR 100.000 i think. It was an impressive collection and after seeing it i started collecting proofs myself, I'm not a big fan on essays, I like to show the actual stamp design, not the could have would have. reprints will never find their way into my collection, while it's true what you write on them... the vast majority of these are made to skin collectors of money and that is something i can't support

Yes, Lasse Nielsen was a capasity in the Danish Filatelistic world and I think you are very lucky to have scans of his collection of Essay, proofs, reeprint etc. I think we could spend some good time discussing and come up with clear definitions of which terms to use. I use the terms that Autcionhouses and stampdealers call the stamps.

viking1234, Your proposal to use a common philatelic terminology is very interesting. I tried to start from the definitions given in the Michel catalog. The translation from German to English led me to terms in English that do not have the same meaning. I would be interested in opening a thread on this topic, but surely a good English and German speaker is needed.

4 skilling color proofs 16 skilling color proofs a couple of the color proofs from Bicolor - be warned with these as they are printed on unwatermarked paper and a lot of forgeries exist. And finally, Coat of Arms, small corner numbers, as with bicolored versions, a lot of forgeries exist.

Nope, you don't need that, you have a section on proofs, essays etc in 2008 version as well, you just didn't read it apparently. It's the same section i'd imagine, it also have the definitions on the subject.

Read it and I also read the introduction pages, but as I writte I call it what the dealers call it, maybe they schould read the book, also international dealers have other definitions than Lasse Nielsen.
