I went to the Old Book and Paper Show in Toronto today. It's a semi annual event were sellers of paper ephemera get together to peddle their wares. It's always crowded. What I like about it, as opposed to a regular stamp show or bourse, is you NEVER know what you are going to find. Still haven't been able to convince the wife to come with me, but I think I'm getting close.
Here's an interesting item I picked up. A booklet of Photo Stamps for the town of Penetanguishene. For those who don't know, which I'm sure is most of you, Penetanguishene, or Penetang, as it's more commonly called, is a picturesque little town on southern Georgian Bay here in Ontario. Mostly famous now for being the location of Ontario's premier Hospital for the Criminally Insane, it's really a beautiful spot, with lake cruises and a rich history in terms of Canada's early days. It's right near Midland which is the site of the Martyr's Shrine, an beautiful old church on the site of a reconstructed Huron village which what the scene of the martyrdom of a couple of Jesuit missionaries by the Iroquois (if memory serves) way back in the 17th century. You can google it.
But enough of the travelogue. These photo stamps were prepared in 1907 (the only date on the package) for G.A. Nettleton, "Druggist and Stationer" in Penetang. There were 12 scenes, 24 labels in the booklet. This rather tattered example has 16 labels left. The photos show local buildings, mostly schools and churches, but also the post office, GTR (Grand Trunk Railroad) Station, Hotel Penetanguishene, and something called the 'Mennicoganashene'. Maybe someone familiar with the area knows what that is.
A neat little artifact, I think.
