Hi,
My name is Hugh MacDonald and I live on Wolfe Island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River.
I’m a member of the Kingston, Ontario stamp club, BNAPS and RPSC, among others. My country collecting interests include Canada, the UK, France and Germany. However, my main focus is occupation stamps and covers – worldwide – artifacts that have a story to tell and document the civil and military conflicts we need to remember.
Looking forward to exchanging information with you.
Regards, Hugh

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Thanks for your note, much appreciated.
I was a more active Canadian collecter in my younger days (I teach part-time as an encore career but I'm really retired - in theory). These days, when it comes to Canada my interests are more aligned to my primary focus on occupation issues. For example, affordable material relating to the Canadian Y-Force contingent that 'occupied' Jamaica in WWII so that the British troops could be freed for duty at home. I define 'occupation' very broadly. In my view it would also involve deployments such as the International Control Commission (1954 to 1973) - a UN mission overseeing the Geneva Accords which ended the Indo-China (Colonial) War. It was lead by India with Canada and Polond as partners. There are Indian stamps with an ICC overprint and, of course, Canadian covers.
I also collect postally used postcards of the US/Canada border fortifications or with images of Martello Towers (worldwide) because, why not? - smile.
Looking forward to connecting with you from time to time. Hugh

to TSF! Thanks for the nice introduction. Great choice for an avatar stamp! Thanks ... it's just my opionion but I've always seen the overprint 'Victoria Regina Imperatrix' (and, later, 'Edwardus Rex Imperator') on the Orange Free State's stamps the most personal examples of imperial and colonial occupation. I know they are just the royal cyphers of the head of state of the UK at the time but most other occupation stamps before and since (not all) are more subtle and mundane. With some exceptions, the occupying power is usually trying to minimize the unrest of the average citizen. The VRI stamps on the other hand are very upfront about what was going on. Even the use of Latin -- the languge of the Roman Empire -- for both the cypher and the denomination -- 4d [denarius] for penny, unitentional though it may be, reflects the historical roots and traditions of Europe and reality of the British Empire of 1900. It's a fascinating stamp and since my collecting focus is on the history of occupations, I thought it would be a good avatar.
