Hello, most know I collect mainly USA stamps, and use H.E.Harris Liberty albums, plus 2 places for stamp info. the point is this. seeing albums have a sort of flaw i guess, Scott numbers in the albums. I ask if anyone has manually added next to the stamp itself, as a reference per say, so in time, you can either use that reference to get a MNH to replace the canceled, or to find out more information on the stamp itself. (deeper information that is). For myself, besides being a hobby, I actually want to find out more about the actual stamp itself. (besides mystic's sometimes lack of info). I actually have a seperate MS word page for the most interesting stamps, not things like the G. Washington, or the US Flag, or liberty bell, for which is over used in stamps. but things like the Trans-Mississippi collection, both original, and re-issue. but back to the point, also has anyone added say numbers to the pages, as for a reference to where each stamp is ? I realize there are suppliments, ect, so actual numbering (unless you have the actual complete Album year sets) aka liberty A,B, C, ect So the questions (or personal preferences) are... would you add scott numbers in pencil next to the stamps? would you add page numbers as reference, from your hand written stamp excel, or word, or other program to find the stamp, instead of looking for it page by page? PS: if i mis-spelled anything, forgive, not enough coffee on this earth can wake me this morning..

I pencil in the catalog number underneath the stamp near the bottom of the space. If I want to know the number I will gently lift the stamp.
I don't care for extraneous markings on the page so I would answer no to your next two questions.

As I make my own pages, my answer may not entirely address your questions.
I like being able to see information about the stamp (catalogue #, date issued and withdrawn, color and denomination. This is not necessarily all above/below the stamp. If there are TYPE/varieties, I try to include a brief explanation. The purpose is to not have to consult a catalogue each time I look at it, or I'm perhaps upgrading a stamp.
I know for many this is TMI, but that is the joy of collecting. How and what you display is all up to you.
I specifically do not like any description to be under the stamp. If black mounts are used, hald or more is covered, or the stamp needs to be lifted to see what is actually supposed to be there. Over the years I have come across quite a few stamps incorrectly placed in albums.
I only make notes on a page if it is in need of revising

would you add scott numbers in pencil next to the stamps? No. I do indicate Scott numbers on personal pages made for varieties /forgeries. would you add page numbers as reference, from your hand written stamp excel, or word, or other program to find the stamp, instead of looking for it page by page? Never had a need. I use pages ripped out of a Scott Catalogue. and OCR'd Finding stamps takes seconds.

When I recently began collecting, I decided not to put information by the stamps. Instead, I take a picture of the stamps and screenshot the portion of the Scott page relating to the them. From there, I save both to the computer.
In the near future, I may inventory my stamps using word processing just like I did with my HO scale trains and diecast airplanes.

(Take a picture of your stamp...you already do that, thumbs up ) The BIG tip, is how you annotate your image. What you place in your naming routine (text string) dictates how masterful you are at recall. I use as minimum 3 1. Scott number 2.Year of Issue 3.Value tablet What ever you add after that, is a bonus (Fauna, flora, perfin, postmark, surcharge, NVI, opts, etc & etc) I have 6,000 United states stamps In a matter of seconds, I can pull up a subset, of any Fauna, flora, perfin, postmark, surcharge, NVI, opts, etc & etc that I want Every US 7c stamp (just an example, I have removed the NEBR opts, precancels, perfins etc)

rod222, Your method of categorizing stamps is top notch. Though for me, I don't collect the number of stamps that you and others do. The few topicals I have are placed on pages for aesthetics. Take flowers for instance. One page will have two to five countries with different dates. So long as the pages are pleasing to my eyes, that is all that counts. The pictures I take of stamps are labeled with country, date and the letter a. For Scott screenshots, the label is the same except that I put the letter b at the end. That way, the two pictures are next to each other. I'll create separate folders for each topic and then put them in the main stamp folder.

fazemanFair enough too. I was thinking had you used the Catalogue Ref first you could just make a subset (say flowers) and roll the File Manager in windows off, to give you a print out for your inventory, saving hours of manual typing. Sounds like you are all sorted though.

I use Steiner pages. I add catalog numbers under the stamps and maintain an inventory in Stamp Manage. All pages are scanned and have a maintain a list of scanned pages so I can have a virtual replica of everything. I do not keep track of what stamp is on what page but StampManage has fields for that,.
