Sorry if I opened thread in a wrong section. Need help identifying 1863 10 Cent Fractional Currency. The ones I found online have totally different layout. I guess there have been several issues. Can't found similar to one I have. Any info and help will be greatly appreciated.  |

gmstamps , Then it may be a proof of the obverse of the third issue 10 cent note. Per the BEP, those notes were available from December 5, 1864 to August 16, 1869. Here is an actual 10c third issue note, showing both obverse and reverse (it is not mine). Here is a link to a BEP fact sheet that might be of interest - it downloads as a pdf. Wow - another awesome item!
I agree - looks like a proof.
Just got an email from Mystic Stamp the other day - offering to sell a real version of this for $119. (No idea if proofs would be worth more or less - could be either!) (And realize that Mystic prices are generally 50% higher than market!)

So as an ignorant Brit who has never come across these before, tell me please ?
From the date I am guessing post Civil War. Was low value paper money introduced due to a shortage of copper for cash coins due perhaps to so much used in manufacturing bullets and shell casings in the war , or is that not the reason ?

Yes, something like that. People hold on to coins for different reasons. So the printed fractional currency that could be redeemed as stamps. |
