Last 5 years have been the most interesting in my life. Got married to a woman I admire, finally got a job a deserve and had a conversations with my wife's Grandpa. He lived an interesting life, made a quite a fortune for himself dealing with stamps and other oddities, but in the end of his years, we developed a strange relationship. He wouldn't trust me with his secrets, but he would always admire my general knowledge.
First time we had a conversation about Zeppelin, he was surprised that I even knew about it. That brought us closer to each other. And then, one day, he handed me a small envelope where he store all his Zeppelin stamps. He took them from me in about 30 seconds.
Then he died, unexpectedly fast...
And then my wife called - there's a huge box with envelopes filled with stamps and it has your name on it. I knew he left his collection to a friend, the one who knew more about philately than I would ever know. To my surprise, there was a letter addressed for me - I know you will do all right. I know you will not sell them without getting known them first. I know you're not my granddaughter. I liked our conversations and your knowledge of things that would never be useful in every day life. You're like me when I was young. You're the only driver in last 40 years of my life I never gave a correction. I know you will do what's right. Wish you luck and have fun...
So, now I'm stuck with a huge box, full of envelopes of different stamps - different era, different countries and I'm thinking about Grandpa - I only got maybe 5% of his collection, but whatever it is, it's valuable and most importantly, it makes me learn, study, spend my time on something I was not expecting to do.
Day by day, hour by hour I admire philately more and more. The amount of time, effort, knowledge is beyond anything I was expecting...
And here it is - Grandpa's favorite topic - Graf Zeppelin and his stamps (I was uber-excited to find them too)...
