I forgot if you knew how to use Gimp. It can be done in Gimp, Photoshop... but Gimp is available at cheapskate price (free). Paint.NET is also free, but I think you might have to add a plug-in to do the black border.

However, with my windows 10, I'll give both a re visit. Thanks a bunch.

There's a slight learning curve to both, but they can do more fancier things than the basic enlarge/reduce/type/cut/paste apps. Unfortunately, I haven't installed on my new laptop, so can't walk you through it.

So? I still have that thread, I couldn't get it to work, I do not have photoshop. If I had it work, I wouldn't ask again, would I? Try being helpful, rather than picking / sniping Thank you.

Gimp didn't work for you back then, rod222? It is easier using Photoshop, but Photoshop isn't free. Gimp does require some manual editing to get some of the edges to look better, so still tedious. Supposedly the Paint.NET is more automated, but I've never tried using it. Maybe I should try installing it & the plug-in on this laptop...

Kim, I had windows 7 then, I was assuming / hoping Windows 10 may be more forgiving. The borders shown in the Auction magazine did not appear to be hand drawn, so I was hoping there may be a new program available. Please don't waste your time on my behalf, I can go looking, elsewhere on the net forums. I use Paint.net on my old 7 banger, I'll see if there is an updated one for W10

Yes, Paint.NET 5.0.13 will work with both Win10 and Win11. BoltBait plugins have also been updated, to 611 now. Their forum suggested using the outline or shadow plug-in. The tricky part is properly selecting the object(s) like a single large item so you can apply the outline/shadow only to the outside. The sample you chose had brown, white, and green edges, so you can't simply pick a color...
Have fun!
On the Australian multiple on-piece, it really looks like all they did was put a black background and then use the lasso tool to carefully select and change everything outside the lasso to white. I don't think they used any automated software to detect/follow the edges. You can see the black border isn't uniform.

Success, this was my effort in a few seconds, with time and skill, I can finally get my "on piece" fragments sorted, (In a more pleasing and regular border) Thanks Kim

If you couldn't get the solution I gave you years ago to work, it would have been helpful to say, "I tried X solution and couldn't get it to work", so we could find a different solution for you and not assume that you might have forgotten the previous advice due to the passage of time. No need to be testy about things.

rod222, you should be able to use combination of select tools to cut and make some of the edges straighter, and/or eraser as well. Not sure about Paint.NET, but on some software, if you hold the shift key down as you erase, it will make the eraser go only horizontally or vertically, which I used to find useful.

Spending more time will improve the results. Nope Holding shift key in Paint.net, has no effect. At the moment do not need eraser, I draw the carousel, Edit/invert the selection, select scissors and cut.... finished ! Rather neat o! Take a pat on the back !
