I have never seen a marking like that. Sounds like some promotional thing.

offhand I can't help with what appears to be the GGS perfin on George V penny - we have guys here who are clever at such matters - hopefully someone will be able to assist. Am wondering if in fact someone has doodled on the bilingual 1913 Union of S.A. 1d. - perhaps the outlining is a graphite mark from a pencil - try using a soft eraser carefully - it may disappear. P.S. yes, welcome from me too:-)

Lots of SA stamps also from the Boer War...will load later Here is a starnge one i found 1d red kings head has a black profile to his head Thanks for looking norman norman02 Hi Norman, welcome to TSF The black profile, is simply a "doodle" someone, with a pencil or pen, drawing on a stamp face. Outlining the head. The stamp is therefore damaged. I have seen similar in my travels. The other stamp has punctured Holes called a PERFIN (PERForated INitials) They are S S / G They are punctured to indicate the company's stamps, and to prevent theft. That indicates it is perfin ID in Catalogue #1990.01 and shown to be G1990.01 GG/S 9,9/9 4½ G G Sandeman & Sons & Co Ltd, 20 St Swithins Lane, London EC4. PS: If you place that stamp in a small bowl of COLD water, for 20 minutes, the paper will float off the back, revealing the holes clearer Hope that helps
