Cover: May 27, 1940 From Dundas, ON Canada to 11th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery [United Kingdom] Enroute, unescorted, from Montreal the SS Eros was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland from a distance of 3km by U-48 around 3AM on June 7, 1940. All crew abandoned the burning ship and survived. They were picked up by HMS Paynter. The badly damaged EROS was towed by HMS Berkley and beached on Tory Island. It was salvaged and repaired in Belfast. Based on the timing, this cover appears to be one of the items of mail that was salvaged. The stamp was lost to water damage. Hand stamped front and back “SALVED FROM THE SEA”, the letter continued to its destination. The tape reads, “G[eorge] R[ex] Found open or damaged and officially sealed P144B. For a photo of the EROS and more information, see Uboat.net: uboat.net/allies/merchants/ship/340.html

A New word for my lexicon "Salved" = Deliverance.
