I found these two precanceled US stamps with an additional "phrase" added that I have never seen before, and can't find on the Internet. If anyone can please let me know the meaning of these precancellations, I would really appreciate it.
The addition of "MW-May 43" and "MW-Jul 43" on the two stamps is what concerns me. Maybe it was common back then, but to me they are unusual.
I apologize for the elongated images, I don't know why the program did that to the images from the digital microscope. Still learning!

Not my area of expertise (or much experience), but I believe these are what's called 'integrals' The Post offive in the late 30's required month and year p[lus user initials for denomination above 6c.
I saw one 'checklist' that actually has a quite a few MW listed after the cities.
Snoop around the American Pre-Cancel Societioes website (or someone here very likley knows)

It's a Montgomery Ward stamp. Other companies, such as Sears, Roebuck also did the same.

Yes, that is the reason/requirement for the dated precancels. In this case, it is not an integral handstamp precancel (I've seen some call it an integrated precancel). The stamps shown are Bureau precancels, and the date was added by Montgomery Ward after receiving the Bureau precanceled stamps to fulfill the requirement (i.e., 2 steps). In an integral precancel, the date and precancel (not Bureau precancel) were done simultaneously by Montgomery Ward (i.e., 1 step).

khj Thank you, a lot of good material in your two links, quite a read, there's a ton of information and techniques in the Tips, Techniques, and Tools by Patterson. It certainly has piqued my interest in precancels! I had a Washington Bicentennial series, 1 1/2c precancel sitting next to my work area, it was set aside for soaking, that I hadn't really paid attention to, but after going through the information you provided, and the phrasing, it appears to be a split, banded, precancel, Peoria ILL, and inverted. Duh. I need to slow down when looking at precancels.
